Cairns in January

Hi all,

I am planning to visit Cairns in January with my fiance.

Wondering if 1) it would be an ideal month to visit, and 2) whether we should actually pre book day tours (as I heard that it can be cheaper if we book on the spot) but am afraid that it maybe a crowded month and availability of day tours may be a problem. Would appreciate it if someone could provide me with some advice.. =)

Thanks!

It's not an ideal month as it will be hot, humid and busy (school holidays), but you should be fine if you book your tours in advance. There are so many tour operators that you shouldn't have a problem finding a trip to the reef or rainforest. The one that I would book first is Skyrail if you're going to go, as it has only limited slots available.

Well from only a few years perspective in Cairns I do find January to be the true start to wet season so may rain. So do not book ahead. Also do not find it busy at all.

Thanks all for your replies...=)

It has certainly been most useful. Hope it does not rain most of the time, or the holiday would be disappointing. As what verdant had mentioned, think we should be able to bear with the hotness and humidity, as we stay in tropical, sunny Singapore after all so I guess we would just need to keep our fingers crossed for less rain and more sun.

We are planning to arrive sometime in early January, so hope it really doesn't rain too often. Any must-see places in Cairns to recommend? So far I've short listed the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Tribulation and the Kuranda railway.. Intended duration of stay is for about 4 to 5 nights approximately.

Well you have 3 of the 4 days covered so perhaps a trip to the Atherton Tableland. Or south Mission Beach and Paronella Park.

I love to have a chill out day, when I was a visitor rather than resident loved having Sunday brunch at Cafe Coco in Cairns International hotel followed by a walk along the esplanade or a visit to casino (funds permitting lol).

If you like adventure then there is white water rafting or hot air ballooning, helicopter trips or perhaps just finding a river for a swim (upstream though, no crocs) in the rainforest. On a hot January day we love sitting under a waterfall somewhere. our favourite places to swim are both a hike and also car needed but include Behana Gorge not far south of Cairns and Nandroya Falls which are in the southern part of the tablelands.

So tons of choices.

Thanks for your advice verdant! Wow looks like there is really alot of things to do here in Cairns.. feeling tempted to like stay longer over here. How is the hot-air balloon ride like? We've alwayz wanted to try out a hot-air balloon ride, but I remember reading somewhere in the forum that rides can get cancelled due to strong winds..hope that isn't too frequent.

Would love to explore the Atherton tableland too...heard that it's a really nice place to visit..really can't wait to explore cairns in jan.. =)
