Depends how adventurous you are.

Great Barrier Reef of course. If you have some diving experience then the must do would be a liveaboard Osprey Reef, Ribbon Reef, Coral Sea etc. Little or no experience then there are a multitude of day trips from Cairns, Port Douglas and one from Mission Beach.

Rainforest, tons of it around. Popular destination is Cape Tribulation plus many other beautiful spots.

Outback, Undara Lava Tibes, Chillagoe limestones caves, Cape York. Kangaroos, snakes and birds of prey.

Aboriginal tourism.

Birdwatching tourism.

Tablelands, waterfalls, rainforest, crops like mango, coffee, bananas, dairy. Platypus, tree kangaroo, rock wallabies.

Islands, Lizard, Dunk, Fitzroy, Frankland, Green plus access flights to the Torres Trait Islands.

Attractions like bungy jumping, Kuranda Train/skyrail, hot air ballooning, scenic helicopter flights, white water rafting, fishing, kayaking, horse riding.

Resort areas Palm Cove and Port Douglas.

Cairns itself is a base providing airport, lodging, restaurants, casino/nighclubs.

You absolutely must get out on the Great Barrier Reef for at least a day trip. The other "must do" is the rainforest. My first pick for this would be Cape Tribulation but if you don't have much time then Kuranda or Mossman Gorge will give you a little peak.

I've attached my GoList of favourite sites:

Is it worth going to Cairns for just two days? We are flying from Brisbane to Cairns and then back down to Sydney. Is it really worth going for two nights or should it be 3? Also, what are some decent places to stay within walking distance of where the boats go out to the reef are?

TeWekas, for a hugely informative half day trip to familiarise yourself with Cairns, its beaches, Botanical Gardens, Flying Doctor etc, see www.cairnsdiscoverytours.com Professional, friendly and entertaining guides will make this the best $59 you'll spend, will pick up at accommodation in Cairns or northern beaches.

An evening visit to Reef Teach in Cairns city will give you so much insight into marine life on Great Barrier reef, and well worth the $15 admission. www.reefteach.com.au
