Cairns and the surrounding area

I'm flying into Cairns with 6 other people in late May. From what I've heard here and elsewhere, finding rooms isn't an issue during that time. I generally book things as I go unless I'm somewhere at the height of a season or during some sort of festival. I thought I'd just book the first three nighs at someplace through homeaway.com and then look for places while I'm there. Mainly because we might want move south and look at Townsville or visist Port Douglas. Is Port Douglas worth a look, in anyone's opinion. Thanks, JPoole.
