Hi Eddie,

I know it is a bit daunting trying to plan a trip to somewhere you know little about - but you might like to start with having a good look at a map of the area. Port Douglas is north of Cairns, while Hamilton Island is much further south in the Whitsunday Island Group out of Airlie Beach. Quite a different part of the coast. Also, there is no actual white water rafting at Port Douglas. Do a google search on white water rafting Cairns to begin you research. The weather late April should be quite pleasant as it is officially getting to the end of the rainy season heading into the dry - but as you know weather doesn't always do what it is supposed to!

Weather in april will be slightly rainy (end of the wet/rainy season), still warm and humid, temps around 23-28 degrees.

Port Douglas is a wonderful place and you can visit the Great Barrier Reef from there. There are companies who pick up from Cairns accommodation and go to the reef. You could also stay in PD for a few days- it has lots to offer, maybe have a look at info on tripadvisor about Port Douglas.

White water rafting done from Cairns, lots of trips (half day and full day options) Just book when you arrive in town.

You can also go the the reef from Cairns.

As mentioned Port Douglas is a lovely place to stay and do tours to the Great Barrier Reef. Port Douglas lies approx one hour drive north from Cairns. Its a gorgeous laid back seaside village offering excellent cafes, restaurant and nightlife.

You could also do the Whitsundays by flying direct from Cairns to Hamilton Island. Its approx one hour flight. www.qantas.com.au If you are in the region and have the time, I highly suggest you catch a flight and visit these beautiful islands for a couple of days.

For white water rafting it can be done at Tully which is approx 2hrs south of Cairns.
