Hello ValueShopper,

I mention three that stood out for me in my trip report 'Cairns visit'.

Hi

plenty of restaurants in town - its the sort of place where you just wander along the street and pick out something that you like.

We're staying at the Cairns Queenslander Apts just a short walk from the Esplanade so we will likely try

most of the places close by.

Cafe China. Greta food and service and wine list to die for.

Cafe China does a very good lunchtime Sunday yum cha as well ("dim sum" I think you call it in US). Lots of Asian choices, the fairly new Hanuman owned by Jimmy Shu is outstanding, it overlooks Trinity Inlet in the Cairns Hilton. Bayleaf does terrific Balinese meals at good prices, its a bit north of the main CBD, just behind Cairns Base Hospital. Nice walk along the Esplanade pathway then cut across at hospital.

For meat pies, check out Meldrums in Grafton Street, huge variety there.

You'll have missed the mango season, Value Shopper, but still quite a good variety of tropical fruit.

Rusty's Market between Sheridan and Grafton Sts is open Friday-Sunday afternoon, the best time is early Friday. Yesterday's tropical fruits included pineapples (sweet and juicy), paw paw (papaya)- get the red fleshed ones not the yellow, rambutans, longans, dragon fruit, custard apple, lady finger bananas, big and juicy local passionfruit and cheap avocadoes. Tableland coffee, yoghurts, honey, spices, and "home baked" breads also.

Also there's a Farmers Market with locally grown produce on Sat. mornings, at the Pier, underneath the Shangri-la hotel.
