I dont no MUCH about Cairns::::::

BUT am seriously thinking about bringing my family here 4 winter 2010/11?.

We have done Rarotonga and have had 3 family resort holidays in Fiji.

We LOVE snorkelling and ideally would love to be on the beach OR very close.

What resort/apartment/hotels can you recommend to us - as the girls will be 13 & 11 - a 2 brm would be great.

Also need a pool.

The girls have grown up with kids clubs, but now that they would be outgrown - a place that has good facilities near or inclusive would be good.

We also dont have a huge budget.

Any recommendations or advice will be grateful.

Cheers

Contact Pat and Mike Woolford, the proprietors of Lilybank.

Lilybank has a wesbite -- which I think is www.lilybank.com.au -- so you can have a look for yourself at what is offered.

As nice as it looks there, the best part is really being looked after by Pat and Mike; I have a lot of respect for Pat, as she writes often for a travel forum and gives sound advice about Cairns, but she never ever mentions that she owns a guest house there, and she would never stoop to recommending her own establishment. She leaves that to others. She even recommends the opposition if she thinks that this would suit the guests' needs!

And the people I've talked to who have stayed at Lilybank say they were treated like kings... Pat and Mike really want you to enjoy your stay, and will go out of their way to ensute that you do. And, being a family themselves, I would expect that they would be very warm towards the idea of welcoming your two daughters.

rhad, take a look at Wotif http://www.wotif.com/ and look at places like Cairns, Cairns beaches and Port Douglas.

Cairns itself doesn't have a beach but about 20 minutes north there are lovely places to stay like Trinity Beach and Palm Cove, amongst others cairnsconnect.com/region/northernbeaches.php

Then, of course, Port Douglas has lovely Four Mile Beach. Port Douglas also has lots of different reef tour boats to choose from when you're ready to go snorkelling.

What an excellent idea! Cairns region is a place of natural beauty but also has an international airport and heaps of variety of activities to do. It is close to both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Its a great destination for families too, with lovely beaches. "Winter" for us is June/July/August (also peak tourist season, with Aussie school holidays in July) but still warm temperatures during the day- ususally 20-25 degrees C, may get down to 15 overnight. Days still warm enough for swimming. Nice beahes in and around Cairns.

HEAPS of different accommodation types- I suggest having a closer look at the Cairns info pages and the accommodation reviews here on TA. May I even suggst that you look at the region, and maybe split your stay up between a couple of towns, for example 3 nights cairns, 3 nights Port Douglas, 3 nights on the Atherton Tablelands. (or something to that effect). Each area has positive attributes- Port Douglas - Daintree rainforest most easily accesible from here with many specialist tours departing daily. Also great Reef destinations (you could go to the reef from both cairns and port Douglas. Atherton Tablelands also beautiful and lots to offer families in terms of nature expereinces.

Almost every (decent) accommodation place inthe Cairns region will have a pool. Most places are doing AMAZING special deals at the momnet too- so i'm sure you'll get a bargain.

Great Barrier Reef, Daintree rainforest, beaches, horse riding, white water rafting, wildlife parks, crocodiles, river cruises, day spas, excellent dining, helicopter flights, hot air ballooning.......friendly locals! Will leave Cairns accomm recommendations to cainrs experts. If you did decide on Port Douglas for a short while I could recomment accomm such as: Beach Club, Treetops, mandalay, Sea Temple, Sheraton Mirage, Port Sea, Reflections.
