You'll have no problem finding something to eat in Cairns with plenty of eateries along the main esplanade for a few blocks, some quite classy and then there's quite a few pubs about the CBD too.

Not sure about on water but try the Pier Centre, sort of just a walk over past the lagoon pool from the esplanade and quite possibly something up on upper level I vaguely recall.

The pubs do get fairly boisterous with all the backpackers and other younger ones about but haven't been often enough to say that any in particular are too rough - maybe if there's a heap of of motorbikes parked nearby!!

It'll be getting so as to be on the balmy side, even of an evening until cooling later but not anywhere near cold like Sydney might still get at night, especially with a big snow dump supposed to be coming.

Did that Vic blast get through or peter out?

thanks for the info...

its nice to know there are lots of places near by, As we have big days plannned.

And, today in sydney, it is beautiful, probably about 26 degrees, blue skies. And, its my day off, so even better.

Also, if anyone has done any fishing wiht fishing the tropics, can you sdvise how your day was, I booked a full day reef fishing, and never having been rough water fishng, dont really know what to expect??? And, its His birthday surprise, So, I cant really ask the other half for advice!!!

Cheers

Ally

I was in Cairns very recently, and us three girls (not young) had a wonderful meal at P J O'Brians ribs and a pint or wine for $10. We were lucky and got a seat outside. Then another night we tried the backpackers close by and had a main, dessert and drink for $10. It was all so good we are still talking about it!!!

Even though you only have a few days up there I'd check with the fishing booking to see if there is some flexibility they can offer re days and then at least if first day is looking good, you go for it and schedule other stuff around it.

It's not real crucial as there's probably not a huge chance of getting a dramatic change in conditions this time of year, though you never know, and hopefully they have a cancellation refund policy just in case there are stronger winds about making for a rockier ride or bigger ocean swell.

That is subdued somewhat by reefs but you go along way off shore and are in deeper water even close by to reefs so there can be some swell.

But all up, good chance it'll be OK and if you're not one for sea sickness, you'll have fun.

Woodchoppers was the name of the place we ate at used by backpackers. Very good.

I eat at Cafe China in Spence St about once a month. Wine list to die for so always take the expense account in. Last week I had my tribe so limited to "by the glass" and they opened a 2002 Penfolds Bin 128 and I had to have 2 glasses at $10 each. A steal. Oh, and the food is very good Cantonese.

If the weather is too rough the fishing trip will be postponed. They'll know about 3 days in advance of strong wind warnings so call them to check.
