Stingers / jellyfish on the islands

We are visiting Cairns in the early new year & are planning a trip to Green Island.

Do you need to wear stinger suits while you are snorkelling or swimming on Green Island?

or is it safe to swim unpretected other than a rashy for the sun, away from the mainland

In the months when stingers prevail, beaches are sectioned off for swimming. The people working on Green Island want you to return and they will advise and look after you.

Have a look at this site re "Stinger news and current info". Green Island features, even though updates stopped in 2007 and the site looks like it had about 6 months of funding: http://www.stingeradvisor.com/. So where a suit.

after reading all this stinger stuff i wonder why after swimming in northern queensland waters unprotected in all seasons in the 60's and 70's i am still alive!!!!!

but yes, wear a suit. it is really a great look and protects from sunburn too.

I worked on Green Island in 1983 - 84 & we swum without suits, I don't even think they had them. The stingers were on the mainland but I don't remember hearing of them on the Islands. We were led to believe that they stayed close to the coast moving in & out of the estuaries

That is why I asked the question.

I think they are saying that the stingers are moving further south and also out to the reef due to global warming. Everything is blamed on global warming but how would we know!

Better to be ugly (I mean safe) than sorry and wear the suits. Not a pretty look but ......

Dont know if you saw on MSN that a guy dived into the water in the Whitsundays in a stinger suit and got stung on the face by one of those iru..... stingers (can never remember their name but the bad ones). He was in intensive care in hospital. Obviously that was bad luck but the answer is easy - wear the suits.

Enjoy but try to also go the outer reef - better coral and fish!

PS Nick - dont they drain you of all your cash as soon as you arrive just in case?!

Made me lol.

One wonders how a suit would protect you if the jellyfishes landed on your face. Those Iru...Irukandji jellyfishes.

Pretty bad luck I would say - considering that is the only part still exposed in those ugly lycra suits.
