Where to stay in Cairns?

I will be in Cairns for a week in August 2010 and would like any suggestions for a place to stay while there. Also, I plan to be staying another week at the Canopy Treehouses and would like to know if that is a nice place as well.

Can't tell you a thing about the Canopy Treehouses, but a good place in Cairns is Lilybank, which has a website (I think www.lilybank.com.au) so you can see what's on offer. The proprietors, Pat and Mike Woolford, aren't just in it for the money....they bend over backwards to make sure that their guests really like their home territory. If Lilybank is not, after the website inspection, what you're after, it's STILL worth emailing Pat and Mike, because I know of cases where Pat (who writes for Fodor's travel forum but never promotes her own establishment) has been happy to recommend her competitors if their accommodation is obviously more suitable.

It's really hard to make a recommendation without an idea of budget, or whether you want an apartment or a hotel.

Personally, we like the Shangri-La shangri-la.com/en/property/cairns/shangrila

the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino http://www.reefcasino.com.au/hotel.php

and The Sebel (previously Cairns International) http://www.cairnsinternational.com.au/

Thanks for the advice. My budget is up to $180 a night for Cairns. I just got an email from the Canopy Treehouses ( I think they were formally known as Fur and Feathers ) about a round trip transfer there and back at a price of $182.50 per person. It is a 90 min one way drive. Is this a going rate for the area or are there other choices?

Do you think that the manager of the Pullman would be willing to give me a rate of 50% off for my stay? LMAO Next time, sign in using a different name than the one that appears on the very site you gave me a link to. Nice try though. I was looking for a more unbiased opinion. Thanks.

OP- We stayed in Il Palazzo which is adjacent to the Night Market. It's a 5 minute walk to the lagoon and a 15 minute easy walk to the Marine Reef Terminal where the GBR cruises depart. Each unit has a kitchen and washer/dryer. That allowed us to pack a lot less by doing laundry halfway through our trip. There's a supermarket down the street if you want to make your own meals (we like to do our own breakfasts). They get good ratings here on TA.

I would suggest having a look on Wotif.com http://www.wotif.com/ and search on Cairns for an indication of prices. You won't be able to book using this site until three months out from your selected dates. The current rates will reflect that it is now the wet season so rates will be lower, whereas you're travelling in August, which is a popular time to go north but it is outside of school holidays so you might be able to get a reasonable deal.

We have stayed at both the Pullman and the Sebel for $180 a night but waited to book a couple of weeks out from our travel time to get last minute rates.

If you want hotel type accommodation in the centre of Cairns, the Novotel is very central and quiet with a great lagoon pool. I have found that the rooms at the casino are very noisy on friday and saturday nights but maybe thats what you are looking for.
