Last night I went on a fantastic trip I highly recommend to anyone visiting Cairns - it was a wildlife tour with a company called Wildlife Explorer. The tour leaves Cairns in the late afternoon on its way to the Cairns hinterland for the night.
Our guide was Ricky who was very knowledgeable about the local wildlife and passionate about showing us everything. At our first destination, a beautiful riverside rainforest spot, we saw platypus, turtles, a venomous black snake, and a range of different birds that Ricky pointed out to us, including the rare Victoria's Riflebird, Kookooburras and King Parrots.
After a delicious dinner in unique a outdoor setting and once the sun had set, we went looking for wildlife and were lucky enough to see brushtail possums, a mother green possum and her baby, two tree-kangaroos and a carpet python - it was unbelievable! Then we departed for our next destination - a dry, eucalyptus forest where we saw what I had always wanted to see, a kangaroo hopping along in the forest - we actual ended up seeing six altogether, as well as wallaroos, tiny rock wallabies, rare bettongs, bandicoots, an echidna, and plenty of agile wallabies and possums, even a couple of gliding possums. Like I said, it was an unbelievable tour and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic australian wildlife experience.
