Cairns at Christmas 2011?

We have 2 families planning to meet in Cairns for Christmas week and then fly on to Sydney for New Year's week. One family is coming from Perth, the other from California. The adults plan to snorkel and scuba, and the 5 yr olds would enjoy a swim. I've heard the weather is rainy and there are stingers that time of year. Does anyone have any input to help us decide to keep our plans to go to Cairns...or have a recommendation for an alternative for Christmas week prior to Sydney? Thank you!

with christmas time beiung our summer and cairns in the far north it will be hot and very humid. can abe a lot of rain but it tends to just be heavy rain int he afternoon. february and march are generally the more cyclone season.

yes there are stingers almost the whole year, but you can just wear stinger suits when snorkelling and diving as most people do.

you could always head out of the big cities to say the south coast of nsw south of sydney? not as much snorkelling or diving but still lots of swimming.

December is a bit early for monsoonal rain, but it still can, it rained almost constantly through the "dry" season last year as well. . I remember a bit of rain last Christmas Day, but bright and sunny for consecutive 3 years before that. And finally it seems the La Nina effect is dissipating so can expect less rain than experienced last year, with devastating floods to the south and major cyclone a bit south of Cairns.

On the Esplanade in Cairns city is a large stinger and crocodile free lagoon, free showers, bbq's, kids love it, its safe and lifesaver patrolled. Just a little north is Muddies kid's playground with lots of watery activities, my younger interstate grandkids love it.

For the reef, lycra stinger suits are available from every reef operator, and they'll also protect you from sunburn, a far likelier danger.

I'm sure you would have a fab time in our wonderful city yes it is our wet season but you can still do some great things like going out to the reef there are stinger suits available on all the boats that go out You can visit the tablelands go to some of the lovely waterfalls or take a trip up to the Daintree to visit the rainforest.as you can see there is great thing to do in our part of the world. We also have a wonderful Lagoon right in Cairns city for Croc free and stringer free swimming that is free of charge to everyone
