Hi Suki,

If you haven't already booked your accommodation I would suggest splitting your 12 days between Cairns and possibly one or two other destinations. Cairns itself, although a pleasant tropical city, has fairly limited attractions nearby - Skyrail, Kuranda rail, reef tours etc. There is no beach although there is a lovely lagoon pool on the Esplanade.

Most day tours from there would involve fairly long drives so perhaps think of spending a few of your days a little further north and closer to good beaches and the Daintree rainforest. For example a day tour from Cairns to Daintree would take a full day - and four hours of it would be spent simply driving there and back again!

Port Douglas has loads of accommodation, beach, shops and restaurants. For a more relaxed mood head for tiny, laid-back Daintree Village or north of the Daintree River to Cow Bay or Cape Tribulation. For a nice beach a little closer to Cairns try Palm Cove or one of the other northern beaches. A full range of accommodation options at all these places.

What time of year are you coming? Unless it's peak visitor season we usually suggest waiting till you get here before booking tours, especially to the Great Barrier Reef when current weather can be a factor. Then you can get a feel for the place and see which tours suit you.

Everywhere is easily accessible but public transport can be very limited in some areas so your own hire car would give you a lot more freedom. Our roads have very light traffic so driving on the 'wrong' side of the road, if you haven't done so before, is very easy. (My husband's first experience was in downtown LA and that WAS scary - but we survived!!!)

I hope this helps.

Don't waste a lot of time in Cairns. t's ok for a day or two then go and see what North Queensland is really about - beautiful beaches, rainforest, waterfalls, rivers and wildlife. We made the mistake of spending 5 days in Cairns and unless you were spending hundreds of dollars for a family to do water-based activities or trips there wasn't much to do. If you want a hire car make sure you book well ahead, as they often run out in peak times.
