May 2007: Cairns or Darwin?

Hello,

We will be visiting Australia for the first time for our honeymoon in May 2007. Currently we are planning on going to Carins for the "beach" portion of our vacation (heading to Sydney for a few days), but we are also considering going to Darwin since it looks like it's a little warmer there. Can anyone give us some advice? We're looking for a resort style town with lots of restaurants and good beaches (and of course, good weather!).

Thanks!!!

If you are looking for a resort style town consider Port Douglas just north of Cairns, While Darwin is warmer, it is more for an outback or gateway to the outback experience.

If you ar looking for a beach resort neither Cairns or Darwin will fit your bill. As the poster above said - look at port Douglas - or in May Noosa will still be good.

Cairns city doesn't have a beach, but there are many just a little north. Palm Cove, a northern suburb of Cairns, has resorts with plenty of top restaurants, and Ellis Beach, just a little north of Palm Cove is one of the nicest beaches in area. But both Far North Queensland and Darwin are not especially known for great beaches, in FNQ its the Great Barrier Reef and Wold Heritage Rainforests which are the major attraction.

A good website for checking out accomodations is www.beautifulaccomodations.com.au

Mission Beach is an excellent beach outside of Cairns (an hour and half), Palm Cove isn't bad...and Port Douglas is good (more commercialised with restaurants, etc.)

Another option may be to head north for a couple days to Cape Tribulation...I think it would be a romantic place for a couple days.

Otherwise...definitely make an effort to check it out...and Mossman Gorge along the way, if you get the chance.

Have fun....

Try Port Douglas, it seems to have everything that you're looking for.

Nice resort village, great restaurants, best beach in the Far North and the closest point to the Outer Reef and is nesteld between the reef and the Daintree Rainforest.

May should see fairly good deals happening,as it's just before the "Season" kicks in.

Temperatures should be around 27C/82 F ( or so).Slightly cooler at night.

Mission Beach's rainforests have suffered just a tad of damage from recent Cyclone Larry. However, as beaches go in Far North Queensland I certainly prefer it 's to most of the others. May can vary, this year it was windy and wet, and today, in June, have been to Port Douglas 4-mile beach, Palm Cove and Trinity beaches and I can tell you they were all awful. Wind, choppy brown seas, better to stay in beach-less Cairns or one of the many perfectly lovely rainforest areas. These beaches can look pretty enough on a calm sunny day in summer, when the brochures are photographed, trouble is you can't swim then because of marine stingers.

An excellent alternative to Mossman Gorge is Crystal Cascades, out of Cairns. No tourist buses, indeed no public buses, so you do need to rent a car.
