For the couple of days I will be in Cairns the long range weather forecast predicts

ESE 23 km/h

I think you need to be a bit more clearer with your question. Are you asking if that's good or bad?

typical trade wind scenario for this time of year.

25 knots wind gusts is up there.

would make for bumpy ride out to the reef.

I think that's just a bit windy ... Cairns is by the ocean, of course it's windy. But that isn't like a storm type wind.

Hi,

www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/beaufort.html

The wind speed you describe is good for sailing, regarded as a gentle zephyr in Port Campbell and Wyoming.

I was in Cairns a couple of months ago. It rained every day. This did not prevent me from getting around the city. The big problem was the winds. The big boats did not go out to the reef on several days and on at least one occasion there was no service to Green Island. With the SE aspect Fitzroy Island would have been quite unbearable.

I suggest you do as I did, take the weather as it comes. When it is too windy on the water take one of the various day tours inland. Kuranda, Atherton Tableland, Chillagoe, Undarra. There are plenty of options and these are only a few.

as a cairns resident who spends alot of time on the water and is very interested in the weather let me just say that any forecast further out than maybe 3 days should be taken as fiction.

I use weatherzone.com.au, and have found it to be the most reliable of the lot.

seeing weatherzone bases their info on material supplied by BOM I don't see how the info there would be "the most reliable of the lot"

seeing as weatherzone also uses

"Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA)

World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)

Swellnet

Customweather

European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)

US National Weather Service (NWS)

Metservice (NZ)

Department of Natural Resources

Environmental Protection Authority (EPA)

Global Positioning and Tracking Systems (GPATS)

The Royal Navy

Ski.com.au

Profarmer

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Manly Hydraulics Laboratory

UV data supplied by KNMI/ESA"

and then

"Experienced meteorologists staff our office from 4:15am to 8pm daily to provide continuous and accurate coverage of the evolving weather issues across the country."

I do consider it the best of the lot for cairns.
