first time, large group- help

we are a group of 8 adults and 6 children ( 4 families) and will be traveling to cairns for 4 nights . excluding the days of travel we have 3 full days. age of the children ranging from 3 to 12 yrs.

for accommodation we are looking for 3 family rooms (which can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children) and one double room.

our budget is 150 to 250 AUD per family per night for accommodation.

we plan to visit the GBR for snorkeling. one day for kuranda.

which would be the best place to stay cairns, palm cove or port douglas?

in these places which area should we stay and any recommendation with regards to hotels/ resorts/rentals.

we haven't decided if we are going to rent cars/vans (need help with that too), but would prefer if shops /restaurants etc are within walking distance.

Hi there, if you are going to the reef and Kuranda you are best to stay in the heart of Cairns as you can walk to the reef terminal to depart on boats and there is a pick up option for Kuranda from hotels. There are plenty of shops and restaurants in the Cairns Central area.

There are plenty of apartment style accommodations to choose from, go to www.wotif.com.au for the latest deals you will find this site helpful.

If you have young children you probably won't want to be stuck on a boat all day so I would recommend a day trip to Green Island so you have the snorkel beach and also resort pool and restaurants to use.

I think you would be better off staying in Cairns, you will be close by the shops also restaurants the lagoon for swimming .There are a lot of hotels in the city also apartments which might suit you even better have a look on the net.

thanks tracy & mosiewigs for the advice

i have short listed a a few of the places which seem to fit our budget

Tropical heritage

Centro Apartment suites

Break Free

Waters edge

Coral towers holiday suite

Palm reef

Waterfront terraces

Esplanade 181

Mercure Harbourside

The last 5 appear to be situated a bit far out. Not sure how the connectivity/public transport is from the ones which are far out? Need some help with regards to which ones we should opt for.

thanks again
