Campervan or motels

Travelling to cairns in October and would like to know if hiring a campervan is better than hiring car and staying in hotels/motels if travelling from cairns to Brisbane and also is 3weeks enough to travel and enjoy the experience of the area

Unless you're a dedicated & experienced camper driver, prepared to pay a fairly hefty price to rent & fuel a reliable caravan /camper, I'd say Motels. And on-site cabins in holiday /caravan parks.

Unfortunately, the cheap Charlies of the campervan industry are notoriously unsatisfactory, unreliable and highly undesirable - the forums are littered with tales of woe from the clueless & ultimately cashless & dissatisfied.

And, it is true, a few who went with Britz, Maui or another reliable firm & had a great time.

I prefer an ordinary car + motel, cabins & local pubs for: flexibility & driving ease, cost, choice of location & accommodation options, more likelihood of meeting locals ( country pubs ).

Thanks , a lot of reviews about camper vans say the same thing about paying for what you get . The interesting point is mixing with the locals which personally I believe is what visiting any country is all about . Thanks again

Australia has fabulous caravan parks which usually are located on prime beachfront locations. Another option is to hire a sedan & stay in caravan parks in their self contained cabins if you decide not to rent a campervan.

Hi,

>>The interesting point is mixing with the locals which personally I believe is what visiting any country is all about . Thanks again<<

This all depends on the where and when of Motor Home camping. You are just as likely to be with a horde of backpackers from Europe or Grey Nomads. If the latter "happy hour" where they share stories of cheap or free camp sites, Aldi specials, how wonderful a particular tow bar is and copious amounts of Vikta Bravo or "Chateau de Cardboard" is not for the feint hearted.

Cheers,

Umm we are hiring a Camry in Tasmania next month from Europcar for $40pd.

And on this one I'm with Oz. and we observed the same sort of phenomena in the US last year too.

But Oz you forgot about the fishing stories and the ever present fish cleaning table.

That sounds a bit too cheap to me nozzie. A quick check reveals that you can't even get one of those little buzz boxes for $40. A Camry is $80.79
