port douglas OR mission beach..

will have 6 days in n. queensland, planning on doing all the usual tourist things, including getting a nice spot for a few days in cairns, maybe shangri-la...or similar..but wabt to rent a car too and head out for a couple days either north or south..lots of info here on things to do in port douglas (rainforest, reef) but could we do these things from cairns just as easy and head south to mission beach..and if we did, whats to see there, have found some info on the atherton area...but again would have 2 days and 1 or 2 nights if necessary for this side trip...which way to head..port douglas sounds like its real nice...is there similar things to do in mission beach area....ALSO, found the "flames dinner" thing up north, sounds a little too stuffy or tame, is there anything else like it anywhere in the area...a night out of entertainment/dinner/drinks in an outdoor setting....thanks again all!

Hi John

You can achieve quite a lot in 6 days, including the R and R.

You can easily base yourself in Cairns, or divide your time between Mission Beach, Cairns and Port Douglas, thereby having the best of everything.

Each place has something different to offer and depending on how much you want to do, you can decide where to stay.

Mission Beach, is around a 2 hour drive south of Cairns, beautiful place, but did take quite a beating with the last cyclone and is still in repair mode. If basing yourself there, you can visit Dunk Island for a day, easily accessible by water taxi, and if intending on doing some white water rafting, then Tully is very close to Mission Beach,

another place to visit and relatively close to Mission Beach would be Paronella Park.

In Cairns, you can easily visit, The Babinda Boulder and Josephine Falls in a day, spend some time relaxing, shopping, do the white water rafting from the Barron River ( not as extreme as the Tully)and also take a day to visit the Tablelands from here.

If interested in Kuranda and Skyrail, you can do this from Cairns also. There are no beaches in Cairns though and you'll need to head north for that.

Port Douglas, is the closest point to the Outer Reef and Rainforest, so I would be doing those two from here. It will be less time travelling to get there and more time to enjoy these two great world heritage listed areas. These two will take two full days.(If intending on spending longer here, the village has a lot more to offer).

That would divide your time as - two days in each place -

You can however do all this from Cairns, by either driving South, West and North equally, and if not interested in the Tully rafting then divide your time between Cairns and Port Douglas only.

I don't know of any other place in the area that offers something similar to Flames of the Forest, but there are many excellent restaurants in the area and Port Douglas is renowned for many award winning ones.

Some suggestions for you to think about....

Nothing out of the ordinary happening, ( as far as I know).

Port Douglas has Sunday Markets which are always a hit with visitors, so your wife may like that.

Nightly on at The Ironbar, there are toad races, a great fun night. Very Australian.

If you have an afternoon to spare, visit the Combines Club, every local will tell you where it is, and have drinks there at around 3.30 pm and watch all the boats come in after a day at the reef, one of the best views in town or anywhere for that matter...

On The Inlet restaurant has happy hour nightly from 3.pm, where you can watch George The Groper being fed and have a bucket of prawns, with a glass of beer/wine or champers for $16.50

Thats' just Port, the village can keep you very busy for the whole stay...

If planning on going to Kuanda and doing Skyrail, do this one on a wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday, as these are the days when all the markets are operational.

Reef trip, pick the best day to do this one, watch the weather carefully and pick the least windy day, for the best experience.

Let me know if I can be of more help.
