I think the only place at Newell is the takeaway and the golf club.

In Mossman, the Junction cafe is fabulous for brekki lunch and dinner. Mojos of Mossman is nice for lunch and dinner, but be aware the serves are HUGE.

You should be aware that although the beach at Newell is lovely, there is really nothing else there, just the takeaway shop. Your 13-year old might find it a bit remote and dull.

In Mossman, Mojo's is good value, several fruit & vege places fine for smoothies also, and Pecorino's next to Woolworth's for breakfast and snacks. The restaurant at Silky Oaks Lodge to the north of Mossman (south of Newell) is wonderful for lunch (but small serves).

For daytime snacks and lunches the new Karnak Cafe and Gallery has recently opened at Diane Cilento's open-air Karnak Playhouse in the Whyanbeel Valley, not far from Newell Beach. It's open from May to October and incorporates a gallery of incredible Hoglund Glass - you can also book for dinner and night-time glass-blowing demonstration. Their website is www.karnakcafe.com.au.

And just down the road, also in Whyanbeel, High Falls Riverside Restaurant is open for snacks and light lunches from Saturday to Tuesday until October - lovely light lunches and tropical fruit tours and tastings. Fabulous tropical restaurant setting overlooking a tumbling river. www.highfallsfarm.com.au.

Eat well!

I also meant to second Carlin123's suggestion of Pecorino's in Mossman - their 'BLATE' (bacon, lettuce, avocado, tomato and egg sandwich) is great and only about $6.

We stay at Newell Beach every year and love it. Coming from the Uk it is great to be able to sit out on the deck looking out to the beach of an evening (the weather is slightly warmer than UK!!) We find it is so idylic that it is nice just to enjoy a barby in the evening. There is an excellent butcher in Mossman and good fish shops in PortDouglas for prawns etc. There is also a good fruit and veg store Scomazzons which is nearby and it is interesting to taste the tropical fruits available there. If you are not keen to cook walk along the road to the fast food place at Newell, nothing fancy but good plain fish and chips.

It is really not too far to travel in to PortDouglas to enjoy the fabulous restuarants there. There is a huge variety there and I am sure you will find somewhere which suits everyone. Our favourites are Salsa and Zinc. Trust you have a hire car as that is really an essential if staying at Newell Beach.

The location makes up for the lack of shops etc and I am sure you will love it.
