1. Re: Stingers?

The stinger season is from around November to May. During this time you need to swim inside the stinger enclosures at the beaches or wear a stinger suit.

However, it has been argued that Stinger Season starts in October and ends in April.

So basically, if you want to experience the best of Nth Qld the best time is between June - September.

The best month is September.

I wondered this too. We are going in April. How do you get on with the reef trips and snorkelling then. Or are the stingers only along the shore?

The box jellyfish are coastal, they do not venture too far out. There are other jellyish in oceans so you can still wear a suit if concerned. I did once and looked charming, I must say....not!

Would not plan time to visit around the beach, have seen people do it only to find they have no time to spend there anyway. Lots to see and do, in summer ocean water very warm and unpleasant. Can get muddy easily, far nicer to plunge into a swimming pool to cool off. Even better find own personal rainforest swimming hole complete with waterfall and turtle.

Box jellyfish are found MAINLY inshore but have been found at the outer reef (Jamie Seymour, the expert at JCU, has papers on this). If the tour operator offers a stinger suit, wear one. If they don't in April, get a new tour operator. Otherwise stay in the stinger net which is usually dragged twice a day. If waves are breaking over the stinger net, wear a stinger suit. Also beware that box jellyfish are more prevalent very close in on calm days so don't be tempted: "if it's not on, it's not on!" (condom = stinger suit).
