Half Day Snorkelling Trip

Wanting some advice on a half day reef trip from Port Douglas, preferably to snorkle off an island as a bit nervous about being in the open ocean. Any ideas. Thanks

Hi Blanco , Low Isles is located just off Port Douglas it is ideal for snorkelling , lazing on the beach and only a 15min walk around it.

There are several options for a full day - only a couple if you want a half day.

The shortest is a 2 hour trip which is offered by Reef Sprinter - a fast 15 min boat ride - and snorkelling . They offer about 3 trips a day - set times.

Another choice is a 4 hr ( half day ) which is private charter boats. There are a couple of boats in Port which offer this - Enterprise , Phantom.

Most offer full day to Low Isles - such as Wavedancer , Sailaway, Shoalin.

Hi Blanco,

2bear has covered the options for Low Isles well, and it is a good day out.

However, if you enjoy that trip and have the time, I would really encourage you to try a trip to the outer reef. The coral and fish are far more abundant at the outer reef, and the water is normally much clearer than at Low Isles.

I know you said you are nervous about being in the open ocean, and only you can decide whether that nervousness would be too much to overcome.

However, there are some factors which might make it less intimidating than you expect:

1. You will be in a group, and there will always be other people in close proximity

2. There will be crew on the boat supervising at all times, who are very vigilant and can help anyone who is nervous

3. If you are not a strong swimmer, you can use a 'noodle', which is a long cylindrical foam device which you tuck under your arms for buoyancy. In fact, this will hold you up and all you need to do is kick (which with fins on is very easy).

Certainly do the Low Isles first to see if you enjoy snorkelling, but if you do and you think you might be able to overcome your nerves, I can't recommend the outer reef trips highly enough.

Low Isles would be lovely. Shaolin does a half day trip, departing at 12 midday and returning at around 6.30pm. And yes, reef Sprinter is the only other one that is a short trip.

Enterprise, Phantom and the like can do half days, but you better have deep pockets, looking at over 2K for 1/2 day.

I suggest Wavedancer (9.30am-4.30pm) or Shaolin. depands what time of year you'll be here. The corals are beautiful around the island. Just try to go out on a clear, low wind day and the viewing will be fine.
