Place to Stay in Port Douglas

Hi Folks ;

My wife & I would like to stay in Port Douglas for 7 nights in July 2012. Can anyone recommend a clean, moderately priced, centrally located, king bed place to stay ? B & B , Hotel or Apartment ?

Your assistance is appreciated !

Hi Dwayner

This will depend on whether you want something quiet a bit out of the central area or want to be in the thick of the night life. There are shuttle busses running frequently to the central area passing most accom places.

If you are flying to Cairns it may be best to hire a car from the Cairns Airport ; +/- AUD 50 per day.

The whole place is just full of accom so maybe go on www.wotif.com; expedia etc to see what is available - but you can't always rely on the photos or descriptions.

If you are here for more than a few days maybe look at self catering as food at restaurants is fairly expensive and sometimes not all that good.

look at stayz.com.

Enjoy

Hi,

As mentioned by Kayte have a look on wotif to see what suits your budget.

wotif.com/hotels/australia-qld-port-douglas-…

Its a very reliable & safe website to use. I would try & get accommodation in the heart of PD so you can be close to the restaurants & cafes.

Thanks --we'd be looking for a place more in the centre of Port Douglas. Any thoughts from 1st hand experience ?

What is your price range - there are literally a hundred places close and in PD town catering for all categories.

We like taking the odd break at Club Tropical which, although right at the end of the busy main Macrossan Street with it's shops, pubs and restaurants, is extremely quiet yet within a few minutes walk of everywhere. But do ask for one of their refurbished water-garden studio rooms which overlook tropical gardens, swimming pool and park to glimpses of the water and distant hills. Some of the other rooms overlook the main road so would be noisier.

The units are individually-owned so vary slightly in decor but they are huge, light and airy with a large sheltered patio which also accommodates the kitchen facilities. Large bathroom too.

They are always on Wotif and often have rates of around $130.

Dwayner, we have first-hand experience of the Meridian Hotel which is just off Macrossan street. We stayed there in 2008 for a week & liked it that much we're going back in October.

We don't usually recommend places as goes the saying 'One mans meat...', however the fact that we are making a return visit should say enough about how we feel about this hotel.

Check it out on the web, too many good points to list them all. We had a superior 1 bed apartment with a jacuzzi on our balcony which overlooked the pool, rebooked the same room for our return.

The hotel gets many excellent/good reviews but as ever no hotel is universally praised.

Too many of the big hotels require a bus ride into town, it's much nicer after a good meal to have a short, comfortable, walk back to your hotel.

Hope this helps!
