Port Douglas and Cairns

We have 5 nights in Cairns and would like to spend a couple of them in Port Douglas.

We would like to do a boat trip, Daintree Park and Karunda rainforest but cannot work out whether Karunda and the boat trip is best done from Port Douglas or Cairns. Any advice please?

You should do the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas as these are the closest points of origin to the destinations. Depending on where you stay in Cairns it may also be closer to get to Kuranda from Port Douglas as well. Actually Port Douglas is the main tour area as most tours from Cairns must pass through Port Douglas to get to the various destinations as well as the reef being closer to access from Port Douglas so boats going out of the Cairns Marina travel further to get to pristine parts of the outer reef itself. Most people I speak to wish they had spent more time in Port Douglas than Cairns as Cairns itself has no beach only mudflats which get quite smelly at low tide. The beach in Port Douglas is a pristine example of the tropics.

Agree with previous post.

Cairns is ok for a base to do maybe Kuranda tour, but we have done this out of Port Douglas one time and it was ok re travelling time. Its only about 50 mins from Port to the sky base.

If you want backpacker party type atmosphere then maybe Cairns for a few days. But if you prefer chilled out then head to Prt. You can hire bikes and ride around, get an early morning coffee and sit at a tiny cafe on the beach. Dainatree,Mossmann all much more accessible from Port as well.

Hi,

Depending on your age group ??

As mentioned - Cairns is great for young backpackers etc whilst Port is more upmarket & relaxed.

Consider spliting your time between the two. Kuranda is best done from Cairns whilst the Daintree NP is best done from Port Douglas.
