Port Douglas for a Day

I am heading to Cairns in two weeks and plan on hiring a car for the Wednesday during my trip to explore Port Douglas and the surrounds. I just wanted to see if there were any recommendations for things to do on the drive up (any must see stops? rex lookout?). Is Mossman Gorge worth a stop before getting to PD ? We plan on also checking out the beaches, eating at tin shed, and attempting to get out on the free yacht club sailing. I want to hit the highlights in one day, so any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Christopher,

Rex Range lookout is great and it's easy to pull off the road to have a look.

Mossman Gorge is about 10 minutes past the Port Douglas turnoff - lovely rainforest walks and swimming holes.

When you turn off the main road onto the Port Douglas road Wildlife Habitat is on the left, just past the supermarket, and is excellent. Tropical birds flying freely and many Aussie animals in other areas. Certainly not a typical 'zoo'.

There's a drive up the hill in town to another lookout, over Four Mile Beach.

Top marks for heading to the Tin Shed too!

Pity you won't have time to explore the Daintree region too! www.daintreetourism.com.au

Thanks for your message.

We are doing the cape trib/daintree tour - not sure if that is adequate to expore the daintree region, but we are between tours with billy tea or jungle tours - havent decided yet.

Depending on your age group Port Douglas is better to stay at. Cairns is Backpacker paradise but Port Douglas is more up market and all tours are able to be done from Port Douglas.

Reef Trips from Port Douglas to the Great Barrier Reef are really fantastic.

A nice place to spend yuour holiday.
