Tablelands & Daintree from Port Douglas

We are staying in Port Douglas for 4 days at the end of august with our own car.

We are planning a 1 day trip to Tablelands. Could you suggest the itinerary (driving from and back PD)?

We are also planning a 1 day trip to Cape Trib. We have realized that most tours stop in Mossman Gorge and do the Daintree river cruise in the morning before Cape Trib. Would be wise to drive directly to Cape Trib. early in the morning and do the river cruise and Mossman Gorge in the afternoon (in order to avoid tours)?

Thanks!

driving from port douglas to the tablelands[ Atherton/mareeba ] will take you about 1 to 2 hours . the road is sealed all the way .from port doulas you head out towards Mossman through cane fields then turn off just before Mossman and climb the rainforest covered mountains ,once you cross the mountain the land flattens out to savanna with lots of scrub trees and termite mounds the drive is a very enjoyable one and very senic ,both Atherton and mareeba have plenty of café and places to get a drink and something to eat .as for Mossman gorge your idea to go in the afternoon might be the best idea , you can no longer drive into the gorge ,you now drive to the visitor centre and there is a shuttle bus into the gorge it cost about $7 per person for the return fare , the bus , visitor centre and café are all operated by the indigenous owners of the gorge and all profits go into the upkeep of the gorge , it is one of my favorite places to visit in ,I hope you enjoy your trip , it is a great place to visit

Here's a good website for the Tablelands:-

http://www.athertontablelands.com.au/

And for the Daintree and Cape Tribulation:-

One hint for your river cruise - cruises leave from both Daintree Village (where the river is narrower and has different vegetation from rainforest to mangroves to open grasslands) and from the ferry area - it's best to go at low or half tide if you want to see crocodiles, otherwise the banks where they lie to warm up in the sun, will be covered!
