Sydney/Cairns/Port Douglas: Ostrich, Emu, Kangaroo Restaura

In the USA, you can now get Ostrich meat --- but it costs more than filet mignon tenderloin. I had it once -- tasted light a very light beef.

Anyway, while in Australia, would like to go to a place with true Australian food -- not necessarily "bush tucker" (although that would be fun).

But a place that does more exotic things like ostrich, emu, kangaroo, barramundi, and at a moderate price. And moderately casual, too.

Any restaurants I should consider? Or avoid?

Thanks.

you will get Emu, kangaroo and barramundi but you wont get ostrich (they belong in africa). you should add crocodile to the list.

Whilst touristy have a look at the restaurants around the rocks for a lunch option $33 for two, most have at least kangaoor on the menu.

for dinner you can try "the Australian" pub...you get the respective meat on a Pizza for $13.50 sm or $19 large.

looking for bush tucker....number of tours will give you he opportunity....try the tails on the tropical ant..tastes like lemon zest!

I had a delicious dinner of kangaroo at the Watergate restuarant on Macrossan St in Port Douglas when i was in town a few weeks ago. Me and my friend agree that it was the best meal we had all holiday! Yummy! :)

G’day Rick, the Ironbar Restaurant / Bar & Grill at 5 Macrossan Street Port Douglas has crocodile, roo and emu on the menu. It is an open fronted, casual place, corrugated iron and timber decor. They also have Cane Toad races in the evening for a bit of fun. There are many places in PD that will serve Barramundi.

Cheers, Wally B :-)

Red Ochre in Cairns once again took out best restaurant award in Northern Queensland for Australian and native food, if you go there also try the redclaw, something you don't see too often. You must also try Moreton Bay Bugs (shovel nosed lobster), available in many better restaurants, and often just referred to on menu as "bugs".

The most acclaimed fish dishes are barramundi and coral trout, but they do come at a price when eaten in restaurants. Barramundi is often available in pub bistros, which will cost less than a restaurant and often in fish and chip shops where you'll pay about AU$6 for a good size cooked fillet.

Most restaurants in Port will serve barramundi, cooked in various ways inlcuding all local hotels ( pubs) and take away outlets.

A few have kangaroo and croc on the menu and some advertise them as their daily specials.

You'll need to check this when walking around town. Try places like Salsa Bar and Grill, Watergate,The Living Room.
