Train from Townsville to Airlie Beach or thereabouts?

We want to fly into Townsville and spend a day or so there and then go down to Airlie Beach. Is it possible to take a train or bus there instead of renting a car? We aren't really keen on renting a car.

There appears to be a train once a day - from Townsville to Proserpine.

From Proserpine, bus to Airlie Beach.

I do not understand how to read that schedule at all. What time does it leave Townsville? What time does it arrive in Proserpine? How much does it cost?

SOUTHBOUND One Way from Townsville to Airlie Beach per Adult… Both these Rail services have a RailBus coach connection from Proserpine Station to Airlie Beach = $16.50

The Sunlander = $75.00 Economy – Departs 2:20PM Arrives Airlie Bch 7:02PM

Spirit of Queensland = $99 Business Class only – Departs 2:28PM Arrives Airlie Bch 6:27PM

You will notice that these 2 trains depart on different days; Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for The Sunlander… Sunday and Wednesday for Spirit of Queensland, so just keep in mind which day you choose, as the price of the ticket will vary according to that train.

Cheers Angie

You would probably be better off on the bus than the train. Australian trains aren't flash, scenic and fast like European ones. The bus takes about 41/2 hours and you won't have to transfer from train to bus in Proserpine. And it's cheaper.

Also, when are you traveling? If you come in wet season (from now until about March) there is every chance the road and/or rail line will be cut somewhere due to flooding.

And when in Townsville, do try to get over to Magnetic Island. It's a short ferry trip and there is a very regular bus that can take you all over the island when you get there.
