Where to go in GBR?

Our vacation time is in late December. Where would be a good place to visit the Barrier Reef so that it isn't wet most days? Or to avoid jellyfish or other hazards such as sandflies?

That time of the year is our wet season. However, it is also very hot and humid. It is hard to say whether it will rain or not.

It is also stinger season. When you are out on the reef on day trips they will give you stinger suits to wear and they will protect you from the stingers.

Now with sandflies, my only suggestion is to buy aeroguard. That will hopefully keep them away from you!

If you have a look at the Whitsunday Islands there are a lot of different island to choose from. Everything from 3 - 5 star. Over the Christmas / New Year period will be quite busy on most of the islands as it is school holidays so i would recommend that you start to have a look around and find some accommodation and flights as soon as possible.

You can fly from Sydney / Melbourne / Brisbane direct onto Hamilton Island and then connect with ferries to the other islands. Have a look at

www.jetstar.com.au and www.virginblue.com.au

Good luck

If it is just the reef that you're interested in and not rainforest or sailing about islands, you could far worse than get a cheap flight with www.airasia.com from KL to the Gold Coast.

Get a bus/train to Brisbane to fly to Bundaberg or you can go by train all the way if you like and http://www.spiritof1770.com.au/ operate a shuttle service to 1770 for trips to Lady Musgrave Island.

It'll still be warm, likely far less humid and very small chance of stingers which only become more likely so far south when there have been consistent northerly winds.

Lady Musgrave Island is as good a part of the reef as anywhere with very little mainland run-off and cooler water with far less tourist numbers all making for a much healthier reef environment.

Alternately, you could fly Brisbane to Gladstone for overnighting on Heron Island but that is quite expensive and another option would be fly Brisbane to Hervey Bay for http://www.ladyelliot.com.au/ but again a bit expensive.

There is the possibility that you could get direct flights from Brisbane or even the Gold Coast to LEI but again very expensive.
