Only 2 days at The Great Barrier Reef !

We are 4 grey nomads who are visiting The Great Barrier Reef during mid February 2013

Please can anybody recommend perhaps 2 day trips that would give us the best options possible

We will be travelling in a motorhome so advice on campsites close to where the day trips would depart from would be brilliant!

None of us will want to dive but would like to try snorkelling

We would not want to do an overnight cruise

Are there better places than others to visiit on The Reef?

Please post your experiences both positive and negative so that we don't waste our precious 48 hours Thank you

There are a couple of caravan parks in Port Douglas which is where many of the reef cruises leave from and Port is also handy for the rainforest of Daintree National Park. Mossman Gorge a 20-min drive, Daintree Village 50 mins, Cape Tribulation via the Daintree ferry about 2 hours.

Another vote for Wavelength - however if the weather is not the best the larger Quicksilver is a good option as it visits a stable platform on the Outer Reef where you can snorkel, go on a semi-submersible (gives an experience as close to snorkelling without getting wet!), underwater viewing platform etc.

Another good reason to stay in PD is because, as lien says, it will be the wet season and February is often one of the wettest months when local creeks and rivers often flood. Port Douglas is flood-free so makes a good base from where you can judge the weather before planning your activities. It is the slowest time of the year so nothing needs to be booked in advance!

But it is also a spectacular time of year - we love it - with sometimes torrential rain but always sunny - very humid - days in between the wet ones. One of our guests put it beautifully. She reckons far north Queensland has 5 types of rain - spitting, showers, rain, torrential rain and Oh-My-G-d!

hi,

Don't forget its Stinger Season too so you will need to wear a stinger suit if swimming in the ocean.
