Late September early october have the best weather but you may get a few more people due to school holidays. (They finish the second week of Oct). If you choose the second week of Oct the crowds are down cos Qld and Vic are back at school.

It is the end of the dry so clarity for dive and snorkel is at its peak and winds are usually only light if at all. The water is warm enough to swim without a suit and you wont have problems with stingers on the reef.

We went in May and the ocean was eerily flat and calm. It wasnt too hot, just purfect! We snorkled for about 5 hours I think. My only complaint is when all the baby jelly fish came in (the Aussies called it sea lice). It was like getting pinched. :)

Agree with Guruswife, best time is late September, October. Remember that the dry season (June - November) is also windy up north. September, October is in between the seasons, so there is a better chance of getting calm conditions.
