Hire vehicles - Changes to operations

The Queensland government yesterday announced changes to the way hire vehicles operate on the island. There will no longer be Troopcarriers with 11 passengers and their luggage on the roof. The new rules will limit hire vehicles to only 7 occupants and nothing on the roof.

This is due to the large number of serious accidents that happen on the island, and involve overloaded top heavy vehicles.

Hopefully this will reduce the number of serious accidents.

If planning on traveling to the island, beware that if you were going to take one of the 'backpacker' type trips, the costs will now increase.

I was somewhat stunned to read that there have been 41 serious accidents on the island in the last seven years. Looks like this change in regulation couldn't come soon enough!
