Heron Island - snorkelling

Hi CindyEdge

Sorry for delay replying - been away!

Is the boat snorkelling trip from Heron a 'daily/paid' trip?

I was under the impression there was excellent snorkelling straight off shore?

Hi - Babz2005. Sorry it took so long to respond. There is a charge for the boat snorkeling, unfortunately. The resort tells you which areas of the island are safe for you to snorkel. Unless they have more areas open now, I would not say the snorkeling straight off the shore is excellent, though it is free. It is so shallow during low tide that the resort leads "reef walks" there. Even during high tide it is not very deep. Because Heron is in the middle of a marine reserve, there are a lot of fish, but since that area is fairly shallow you won't see as much as you would on a boat trip. It's a little deeper down by Shark Bay wher eyou can also snorkel, but that is mostly sandy as I recall. You'll see a lot greater variety of fish if you do supplement your shore snorkeling by taking the boat trips from the resort to the outer reef around Heron - and especially wonderful snorkeling if you can take the more expensive trip to Wilson Island from Heron.

After the coup in Fiji settles down, you should consider going to Kulu Bay resort on Beqa Island in Fiji. They truly have exceptional snorkeling from shore. (We saw fish there we normally would only see diving - bat fish, lion fish, clown/anemone fish, etc.) Also Naigani Island Resort had pretty good snorkeling.

Hope this helps!
