hamilton island questions

we are planning to come to Hamilton islan d feb 2011 (ealry i know but will start planning this winter so booked up early. have some queries based on reviews i have read;

1) will it be raining a lot in Feb poss end feb?

2) is the water cloudy? have read that it is and visability is not good for snorkelling. i cant dive (hole in ear drum). we have done a quicksilver tour before to outer reef which we enjoyed.

3) is is really comercialised?/run down have read that it is commercerlised. have stayed at lakes cairns before and loved it but dont want to dont want to pay to go there to be disappointed.

2 adults coming to stay.looking at the shorelines accomodation. we did look at Hayman island but bit too expensive.

any tips welcome.

thanks in advance

Hi Helen

1 - February is the end of the rainy season but with weather it is impossible to predict .. I have been in February and never saw a drop of rain but in April we had torrential rain

Every year is different .. every week is different .. no one can give a guarantee that it wont rain but this applies to anywhere in the north of Australia during this period

2 - again weather dependent .. one day the water is crystal clear and the next rain and winds stir it up and the visibility is very low

3 - I cant answer this as I guess I am biased .. a lot of money is being spent on the island to bring it up to world class standard .. the new yacht club will be opening soon along with a new golf course on Dent Island .. I wouldn't call it run down but there are certainly areas that need improvement i.e some of the roofs need redoing .. Toucans restaurant has been updated and renamed Sails

You will need to do a search of past answers and comments on TA plus of course reviews of HI and its accommodation ... many people return year after year and love it, others think once is enough ..

Shorelines has gotten some excellent reviews here on TA .. I think I even saw some footage on Youtube of the inside of some apartments

Also on youtube there are various videos of the island .. I found it quite interesting when I did a search a couple of weeks ago

At the end of the day .. you just need to make a decision and hope for the best .. whenever any of us travel overseas we are hoping that everything will be as good as we imagine.. I dont think HI would disappoint you especially after comments I get from my husband's english relatives .. and we have taken quite a few .. they really like it

It ll looks very lovely anyway.

Hi Helen!

To answer your questions:

1) i have been to hamilton island twice in february and it didnt rain at all the first time (mid-late feb) and we stayed for 4 nights and the second time (this year in mid-late feb for 6 days) we had rain for just 1 day but we spent that day down in the pool bar - it was great because no one was around. the weather is still very warm. To be honest, it is wet season so it is highly likely it will rain. If you go with the expectations of rain then atleast you can be prepared.

2) I too can't dive - i had a hole in my ear drum but had surgery and it is now replaced. However, i still cannot dive - only snorkel. When we went up there this year we did the H2O Snorkel Safari trip. It is 3 hours and takes you to a snorkel area just off one of the beaches on a surrounding island. The visability there at that time was ok - i have snorkelled off Lizard Island up in North QLD and Ribbon Reef #5 and nothing will ever compare to that because they have so little tourists that visit. However, you could still see the coral and fish. From there they took us to Whitehaven Beach. You will have to wear stinger suits (everyone has to) as it is stinger season.

3) The island is commercialised in my opinion but i love it like that. Ive been to Daydream and Club Med and they just dont appeal due to the lack of options. There are still plenty of areas around the island that you can escape to. Have a look at my photo's it will give you an idea of what the island looks like. I do not believe at all that it is run down. I was there in Feb this year and went again in May and i was suprised to see that the main resort area and one of the restaurants (Toucan Tango) had been refurbished. They are spending a lot of money on the island and are slowly refurbishing.

Shorelines looked great from what i could see. There have been quite a lot of comments on TA on them, i think you will be pretty happy.

Advice for you: take plenty of sunscreen, make sure you go to one tree hill and watch sunset but also make the effort to watch sunrise. both are totally amazing. also, go on one of the many walks up to the top of the island the views are worth it!

Good luck!!
