day trip

Is it worth visiting Hamilton Island for just a day? Is there anywhere you can catch a ferry, or is plane the only way in?

Hi shimsgrl

Are you staying on another island or on the mainland (Airlie Beach)? It is possible to do a day trip to Hamilton Island. There is a ferry operator called Fantasea (www.fantasea.com.au) that operate ferries from Shute Harbour (which is the mainland port) and Daydream Island. The price is $53 per adult one way.

You certainly can visit Hamilton Island for the day. It is a pretty developed island and there is a lot to do - if you wish! You can hire a golf buggy from down at the Marina where you arrive at and drive around the island yourself, or there also is a shuttle bus which operates about every 10-15 minutes.

If you have a look at the main website for Hamilton Island: www.hamiltonisland.com.au it will give you more of an idea about the island and what it has to offer. Activities such as mini golf, go karts, quad bikes, target shooting or you may just want to find a sunchair and lay down by the beach or pools and relax. There also is a range of dining options - you have a bakery which sells sandwiches / pies, a fish & chips takeaway shop, and restaurants (some are not open for lunch) and even a supermarket.

Hope this helps!

Hi Shimsgrl,

Hamilton Island have a special last minute rate if you want to stay overnight and I recommend you consider it if you have the time. $118pp gets you a lovely 4-star Reef View Hotel room with breakfast included and this includes your transfers over from the mainland (Shute Harbour, near Airlie Beach). Hamilton Island are trying to reduce the number of day trippers at the moment, and in the day trip fares have increased accordingly. You now pay $125pp for a day trip and this includes a lunch voucher for the bakery (I think).

You do the math, the overnight deal is fabulous value!!

Oops! I muddled up the hotels... the brochure has a picture of the Reef View Hotel on it and the price of $118, hence the confusion. What you get for $118 pp/pn is a Palm Bungalow and breakfast is not included. Reef View rooms start at $138pp/pm last minute.
