GBR 'better' from Cairns or Airlie?

We're going to Australia next month, starting with 5 days in Sydney and ending with 4 days in Melbourne. In between, we'd like to see the Great Barrier Reef but are undecided between Cairns (marketed as 'the' place to go for the Reef) and Hamilton Island (or maybe even Airlie Beach), both of which claim access to the Reef - and are also in close proximity of the Whitsundays - and Whitehaven Beach. We're leaning towards Hamilton Beach but want to make sure we're not missing out on a 'better' trip to the Reef - does anyone know whether the Reef spots one can visit from Cairns are 'much better' than those visited during trips from Hamilton Island?
