Great Ocean Road - 2/3 days driving - best route?

Im doing the great ocean rd in around 3-4weeks time from adelaide to melbourne and then flying back (got a really cheap flight)!

I was wondering if anyone could post possible routes and places to stay over a 2/3 day drive.. obviously dont want to get there the quickest way, want to see some animals if possible and view what Australia really has to offer..?

Thanks

From Adelaide your first options are whether you would like to drive along the coorong, through Kingston to Robe then Beachport or head inland and see the Coonawarra for its wines, Naracoorte for the World Heritage listed caves and Mt Gambier for the Blue lake (not quite so blue in winter but still interesting) Once you have made that choice I would then suggest you stay at Mt Gambier or Robe then perhaps pick Port Fairy or Apollo Bay. Your choices will depend on what you like to do. If you want to see the penguins for example you would go to Port Fairy and spend time there. From either of those places you can continue along the GOR to melbourne. You ask for accommodation options but to save time can you post a nightly maximum budget - it makes things a lot easier. There are many accounts of GOR journeys here in TripAdvisor.. have a browse and research from others' experiences.

The Coorong is a great place but I would definitely recommend heading to Naracoorte. The caves are really interesting and offer something a bit different. It's not too far to the Grampians from there either which makes for a nice drive.

While on the GOR you should take some time to visit the Otway Ranges - there is a fun treetop walk you can do - if you don't mind heights!

And I definitely recommend staying in Port Fairy. Apollo Bay is really nice and is a great beachside spot for a bit of lunch but Port Fairy has that sleepy little fishing village feel about it. Lots to see. Goodluck!

Hi tuborg09

If you are into wineries take the route via Keith, Naracoorte, Penola to Mt Gambier (Coonawarra wine district) If you are interested in coastal towns, fishing, seafood, coastal scenery then the Coorong via Kingston, Robe, Beachport then to Mt Gambier would be the way to go. There are some wineries along this route south of Kingston also.

Mt Gambier has its Blue Lake and some caves nearby. It also has a very interesting Tourist Office with the "Lady Nelson" interpretive centre.

From Mt Gambier go via Portland, Port Fairy to Warnnambool. The Flagstaff Hill interpretive Centre and Tourist Office in Warnnambool is very interesting. They put on a "Sound and Light" display after dark highlighting the early settlers and sailors. Plenty of accommodation at Warnnamboo for all budgets.

From Warnnambool head for the Otway Ranges. Before reaching them and not far out of Warnnambool is a cheese factory with free tastings of the various cheeses. (I cannot recall the name of the factory) A previous forumer has mentioned the tree top walk in the Otway Ranges. Well worth a visit. I am getting a bit ahead of myself here. Before the Otway Ranges and Lavers Hill are the towns of Peterborough and Port Campbell. The Loch

Ard Gorge and the 12 (now 11) Apostles are just past Pt Campbell. A large tourist centre has been built at the 12 Apostles and a large car park with a subway going under the Highway accessing a good view of the Apostles is the way to go. Also fixed wing and helicopter flights are available from the tourist centre to get an aerial view of the Apostles and the general coast line.

Now...after this are the Otways. Then you decend the ranges into Apollo Bay and onto the GOR proper.

You pass through Lorne, Anglesea, Torquay and into Geelong. Bells Beach, the famous surfing beach is between Anglesea and Torquay.

I think if you see all of this your 2 - 3 days will be gone.

How nice to see the previous itinerary. We're planning to come back from KI to Adelaide on a late afternoon flight. We'll rent a car and maybe drive to Murray Bridge (or do you think we could get further by dark...and where?) Then we have 2 nights/3 days before we need to be in Melbourne. Where do you suggest staying using your plan? Still trying to find the drive times online somewhere.

Thanks! K

Hi hereanthere

Murray Bridge would be a good stop after leaving Adelaide late afternoon. The drive would take about 1 hr. There are not many options after Murray Bridge for accommodation. The Murray Bridge Oval Motel (ph 1800641689) at 4 LeMessurier St Murray Bridge, the Central Olympic Motel, 34 Standen St. (1800 088322) and the Murray Bridge Motor Inn, 174 Princess Highway (08 07622599) are the three listed in my Accommodation Guide all between $80 and $105 for 2 persons per night.

From Murray Bridge travel to Tailem Bend and then either turn right after Tailem Bend and travel via Meningie to Kingston, Robe, Beachport, Millicent for the coastal drive (Coorong National Park wetlands on the way) to Mt Gambier or continue on from Tailem Bend on the Dukes Highway to Keith and then turn right to do the winery trail to the "Coonawarra" area between Naracoorte and Mt Gambier.

From Mt Gambier travel to Portland, Pt Fairy, Warnnambool etc as outlined in the previous itinerary.

I would suggest staying at Mt Gambier the second day,

Apollo Bay or Lorne the third day and into Melbourne on the 4th day. This gives you ample travelling time with plenty of time to see interesting things on the way.

Hope this is of some help.

John

What a great route Whymayor. We did the GOR too from Adelaide to Melbourne but would have loved to have followed your suggested route.

If you are interested in seeing some animals along the way, stop at the Tower Hill Reserve just outside Warrnambool. We saw emus and kangaroos at this reserve.

To get an idea of drive times, use the route planner on visitvictoria.com. Although it is a travel site devoted to Victoria, the route planner can be used for anywhere in Australia.

Thanks for the follow up on the trip John and the route planner Sara. This post has been a great help!

Do you think we can squeeze in a walk in Otway or the Otway fly tree top walk (worth it?) during the drive?

herenthere

Yes you could easily fit in a Tree Top Walk. When you reach Lavers Hill watch out for the signs to the Tree Top Walk. By the way there is an excellent bakery at Lavers Hill.
