which winery is closest to the city?

we would like to visit some wineries and would probably rent a car to visit them.

which winery is the closest to the city area? (as we would not like to drive too long)

or is taking a tour to the wineries a better option than driving?

PenfoldsMagill winery is in suburban Adelaide in Magill and is accessible by public transport. www.penfolds.com/en/Age-Check.aspx…

Also right next to the botanic garcens is the slick modern National Wine Centre where you can learn about the history of wine and have a taste.

Yes, Unclefey beat me to suggesting the National Wine Centre.

If you don't have a day to spend in the Barossa and you want to sample wine from a number of different wineries under the guidance of wine experts, this is the place to go.

They will also give you lots of great information about wine making and plenty of hints regarding wine appreciation.

Will McClaren be nearer than Barossa?

which winery would be a better place to visit and what are their opening hours? Are they open everyday?

Hi,

McLaren Vale is about an hour South of Adelaide. Each area has its own feel. There are also wineries in the Adelaide Hills.

There are dozens of wineries in each of these areas. Some are open everyday and some only on weekends and actual opening times will vary.

Do you drink a particular type of wine? If you are not a regular wine drinker you might find the more fruit-driven McLaren Vale wines are more approachable.

Cheers,

The Adelaide Hills, Barossa and McLarenVale (Fleurieu Peninsula) are favourite day driving trip destinations. I suggest you look at the "Which Region Should I Visit" TOP QUESTION in the South Australia Forum page. You can find information including some videos which may help you make up your mind which you'd like to visit.
