Adelaide district wine tour recommendations

Hi we are arriving off a cruise ship in March and would like to spend a good part of the day (we probably have between 9 am and 5 pm) doing a tour of some good wineries. Personally I would favour the Barossa valley, but am open to suggestions. Anyone had any really good reports of reasonably priced tours? We would also like to spend the later part of the day (2 hrs or so?) wandering back to the ship through "the key sites" in Adelaide - again recommendations welcome. We are approx 60 yrs old. Thanks

I suggest you consider the tours offered by the cruise ship tour desk

One of the advantages of these is that they will co-ordinate timing with the arrival and departure of your ship.

In Adelaide you could visit penfolds.com.au/cellar-doors/magill-estate.a…

Take a taxi from the city centre.

Tours offered by the cruise desk can sometimes be more expensive and less flexible than if you book a tour.. I'd do the research and see how the figures pan out

Companies like Tour Barossa http://www.tourbarossa.com/ will tailor something to suit.. collect you and plan tours which will take you to the type of wineries which most appeal. If you're a serious wine lover this can be much more enjoyable than jumping on a big bus for a whistle stop tour of the wineres which allow buses.

I can only endorse operators which I personally have experienced but there are other tour companies which can take you to McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills as well. Outer Harbor is close to the Barossa so, to make the most of your time on the ground in Adelaide I'd probably go there.

It's all a matter of budget and taste.

It's also a matter of ensuring the ship doesn't leave without you! If you go on a tour organised by the cruise line, you have assurance on that point.

Hi, thanks for your advice. However I think the dissadvantages of using a ship's tour far outweigh the advantages IMO:

1. Usually you are in a large (50 - 70) people

2. The group moves at the pace of the slowest in the convoy

3. You are "herded" from place to place

4. The service you receive is impersonal and generally poorer than you receive on a one-to-one or in a small group and

5. last but not they are expensive (the cruise ship markup is CONSIDERABLE).

That's not been my experience with RCI.

I'm sure you will be able to arrange an independent tour more suitable to your requirements :)

I'd recommend Milan from Blue Ribbon Limos.

He has chauffeur cars and will take you on a private tour. He's reasonably priced and has lovely drivers.

I work for a minibus company and we use him and his company for smaller groups.
