KI Widerness Retreat

We are going to be in South Australia late November and want to spend 2 or 3 nights on Kangaroo Island. We want to maximize seeing wildlife. What about Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat? Not the cheapest place on the island, but it is near Flinders. What do you think? Any other suggestions? We are undecided about renting a car on the island or not.

You will see wallabies outside your front door at the Wilderness retreat. It is one of the closest places to stay for those who wish to explore Flinders Chase. The other recommendation close to the National Park if budget is an issue would be the Western Ki Caravan Park. I've stayed in their cabins and they are more than adequate . Definitely Kangaroos and Koalas right outside the door. Another option is to stay inside the park …sa.gov.au/parks/…Kangaroo_Island at one of the lighthouses.. but I will say that the comfort level is basic and you would need to fully-provision if you wanted to do this.

The opportunities to eat and drink apart from self-catering are extremely limited down the western end which is why the Wilderness Retreat is popular with people who are on shorter trips. The Retreat has a restaurant on site.

I would always recommend that people hire a car if they are looking to explore Kangaroo Island simply because the only other option is a guided tour which, for many, can be cost-prohibitive. It is an easy place to self-drive but much bigger geographically than many people realise until they see it for themselves.
