Western Explorer Road

We will be driving the Western Explorer Road in March with our camper trailer, and would appreciate any advice on the following :

Stanley/Smithton 2 nights, Corinna 2 nights, Strahan 2/3 nights . Is it worth staying around Arthur River for 1 night on the way?

Thanks,

Arthur River is worthwhile if you want to do a cruise up the river. http://arthurrivercruises.com/

Hope this helps,

We did the Pieman river cruise last april. Very enjoyable and peaceful/tranquil. You get a 1hr break, with a supplied packed lunch in a little esky to walk to the beach/headland for some exploring at the mouth of the river. We will walk past some old fishing cabins (which still are occupied at the headland) and keep your eye out for the uniquly decorated tree. Corinna is just soooo quiet and remote with some lovely walks. We were only there for 24hrs and would have loved to have stayed longer. You will enjoy exploring the western part of Tassie. We traversed the western explorer some 10 years ago, and though there is not alot to see along the way it was an enjoyable drive along the white road, which they are over in that region of tassie. I remember we had a fantastic counter lunch at the pub on the hill overlooking the ocean at Marrawah ( I think it was here as this seems to be the closet point to the ocean). Enjoy your trip.

cheers

ChrissBrisbane, did you see this notice issued by Tas government?

Road maintenance update from DIER:

The Donaldson River Bridge on the Western Explorer Road (Heemskirk Developmental Road - C249) will be closed for essential deck replacement work from 7:00am Tuesday 12 March to 6:00pm Tuesday 26 March 2013 inclusive.

The road will be closed and the travelling public will need to use alternative routes during this period. Signage will advise road users of the closure.

The bridge and road will re-open on Wednesday 27 March 2013.

The Donaldson River bridge is on the branch of the road that goes to Marrawah via Arthur River (ie. north of the Corinna Road from Waratah) so Corinna is still accessible from the Murchison Highway through Waratah and Savage River and also southward to Zeehan.

Thanks for the information. Still trying to get my head around this, will we still be able to get to Arthur River?

Yes, but you'd have to backtrack to head east along the Bass Highway as far as about Wynyard then south on the B26 till you meet the Murchison Highway, then west again through Waratah and Savage River on the B23 to Corinna.

For what it's worth, the route I've just described is quicker than the Western Explorer Road from Marrawah to Corinna. :)
