6 Travel Days in Tasmania

Seek advice for the following itinerary.

In general, what is the usually time for sunset in Aug? Is it not recommended to drive after 18:00?

Day 1 20140809 Sat Arrive Hobart Airport at 16:05, Stroll a bit at city centre

Day 2 20140810 Sun

Whole day in Hobart. No car, just by walking.

What is a reasonable route to see things in Hobart? e.g. Female Factory, Botanic Gardens, Waterfront & Battery Point, St. David’s Cathedral, Penitentiary Chapel and Criminal Courts. Miss any nice places? How to visit MONA?

Day 3 20140811 Mon Car rental around 10:00

3.1 Morning to Mt. Wellington and then leave Hobart to Richmond (lunch at Richmond?)

3.2 Afternoon to Port Author (enough time to visit Port Author?)

3.4 Accommodation at Tarana (because cheaper and closer to Coles Bay, appropriate?)

Day 4 20140812 Tue

4.1 To Swansea

4.2 Freycinet NP, visit Wineglass Bay

4.3 Accommodation at Bicheno to see Penguin (Any place without charge? Any penguin at that time?)

Day 5 20140813 Wed

5.1 Moring to St. Helen and Bay of Fires

5.2 Accommodation at Launceston

Day 6 20140814 Thu

6.1 Morning to Sheffield

6.2 Cradle Mountain (will it be too cold?)

6.3 Accommodation at Launceston

Day 7 20140815

Fri 7.1 Leave early to airport and return car (09:30 flight)

Is this a legal document?

Seriously your style is very confusing

For Mona you need to do the ferry BUT if you plan to walk the other sites… no way.. female factory to waterfront is a big walk (TBH more time spent walking than seeing)

In the 6s… what time do you mean morning at sheffield. Drive up to CM may involve shuttle buses etc so it depends on what you want to acthieve.

Sunrise and sunset times - www.timeanddate.com/sun/australia/launceston…

Day 2, if you get to half of what you mention you'll be doing well, as GW said, a lot of walking.

MONA ferry details - http://www.mona.net.au/visit/getting-here/

With sunset being 5.30pm on the day you're on the Tasman Peninsula, you don't pick your vehicle up until 10am, and you want to visit Richmond, you might be lucky to get a couple of hours at Port Arthur.

With the penguins, you need to read Luigi's comments at the link below -

tripadvisor.com.au/Travel-g255096-c140322/Ta…

IMO you should head straight to Cradle Mt, have a look at Cradle Mt, do the Dove lake walk if you want, then take your time heading back to Launceston.

It will more than likely be cold all over Tasmania, and even colder at Cradle Mt with possible snow.

Just make sure you're off the roads by sunset, especially rural roads.

Safe travels - Robert

Thanks to your comments.

Luigi, you are so attentive. 3.4 should be 3.3.

Rob, your feedback and links are very useful. I'll wake up my partner early so that we can travel safely :). Any information about which roads are rural road? For day 2, actually I have no concrete ideas. Just thinking about wandering leisurely in Hobart and no must-visit-place. Any walking route recommend? The visit to MONA is quite expensive to me. For 2 persons, it's total AUS 80 for the boat and admission. Worthwhile?

GW, you are a bit harsh, haha! The writing is just my style. Hope less confusing next time. I'll take your idea and Rob's suggestion to go directly from Launceston to cradle mountain on day 6, and visit Sheffield if time allowed when coming back.

Hi yutHK,

Most roads that run off the major highways are usually classed rural, and can be sealed or gravel. They normally connect small towns.

I'm the last person should ask for a recommendation on the worth of MONA, many like MONA, many don't, but I will say the architecture and construction is amazing.

With regards to walks, while you're visiting Freycinet, the walk up to Wineglass Bay lookout on a clear day is spectacular, but IMO I wouldn't bother to reach the bay, it's a sandy beach, with a few wallabies. Then there's Dove Lake walk at Cradle Mountain, if you had time you could try walking up to the plateau to Marion's Lookout, but being winter when you're there this could be a problem depending on the weather.

Have a look at the link below for lots of great short walks you could plot while touring -

http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/?base=1315

Also keep an eye on the weather when driving at elevation like at Cradle Mt, it can change in an instant, save the link below.

Rob, you are so helpful and considerate! We come from Hong Kong which is with very hot and humid weather. It's my first time in Tas. I am afraid that I cannot stand in a cold and windy outdoor place for a long time :).

The link to short walks is great! I like to walk, as far as it's not freezing!

Hi

As someone who also comes from a warmer climate - it will be freezing in Tasmania in August - bring some warm jackets! Also, I also find the rural roads quite difficult in Tasmania especially if it's raining or foggy - be very careful while driving. I usually tried to make sure that we never drove at sunset.

BTW I loved MONA and spent an entire day there!

And now without the spelling errors - I was in a rush

yutHK

I found your writing style easy to read - unlike those who use multiple abbreviations. I find that writing style confusing. What is wrong with plain English?

As for Mona you can save quite a bit if you drive yourself and it appears you have the car for the rest of the trip. As to the worth of the entry fee or not it depends really what you are interested in.

Re Day 1 and arriving in Hobart Airport at 16:05 and having a stroll in the city centre - pretty much everything will be closed and the place deserted by the time you get there. Maybe going down to Salamanca and a walk around Battery Point would be a better idea.

As for the temperature in August - expect cold and hope for better! The best approach is to wear layers as you can get 4 temperatures in one day.

Regards

Suzi

Thanks to Eolo and Suzi's warm concern. I'll bring enough clothes and plan to go to MONA by rental car.

Tasmania, I am coming!
