4 nights, 5 days in Tasmaina

Hi, Looking for some suggestions. We are a group of 5 mid 30's (2 couples, 1 single) travelling to Tasmaina in the first week of April and are looking for suggestions. We have already been to Hobart a couple of times and so are okay to give Hobart a miss but we have seen very little of the rest of Tasmaina. We are debating about whether it would be better to have one base and do day trips from there, such as a self contained cottage or to travel round and do the B&B / hotel thing. Our interests are walking, kayaking, scenary and of course food. If we do the one base we would like to find ourselves close to a nice local pub for the evening. Appreciate we are very limited on time amd what we can feasibly do and see in that time.

Any suggestions would be great,

Thanks,

We spent a week in Tasmania in November 2006. As our time was limited we chose to only do the east coast. We had a fantastic week and thoroughly enjoyed our time. Highlights were Bicheno where we stayed at Diamond Island Resort, great location, fantastic rooms and facilities with views over the water, penguin viewing each night and restaurant if you felt like it. Freycinet was another highlight with the walk up to view Wineglass bay very worth doing. St Helens is a lovely small town with great seafood. Georgetown was not really worth going off the track to spend a night, accommodation was very pricey and low quality. We spent a couple of good nights in Launceston at the Alderton, old nunnery converted into hotel which was in a good location and very comfortable. We found the distances to be very easily managed in a car, we are used to the distances in South Australia, and these were so easy to do in a morning or afternoon, still allowing time for sightseeing and going out in the evenings.

The absolute, absolute best restaurant we experienced (rates amongst best at home too) was Angasi at the Bay of Fires - fantastic innovative food, stunning location and great staff.

Tassie is so small, you do not need a base, just go with the flow and let your senses take you to where ever.

I have driven tassie a few times, and its such a beautiful place with stunning isloated places to visit. East Coast or West Coast...down the middle, or up dusty roads. Grab a map and have some fun, just flow...start from either Hobart or Launceston.

So my suggestion with 3 people hire a car and go exploring.

West Coast : Cradle Mountain, Queenstown, Strathan

East Coast: St Helens, Bicheno, Swansea, Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park....or Maria Island, ferry departs at Triabunna.

around Hobart: Mt Field National Park , Port Arthur,Gordon Dam, New Norfolk, Huon Peninsula, and dont forget to drive or take the ferry to Peppermint Bay for lunch or dinner. (you will not be disappointed).
