Hotel vs B&B

There are 2 of us travelling and we're in Tassie for 2 weeks and spending a weekend in Hobart (Sat/Sun nights to ensure we catch Salamanca Mkt). How important is it to stay in the city centre to get the best out of Hobart? Thinking of the St Ives or a nice B&B. However most of the B&B's are out of the city centre (but the reviews on B&B's seem to be better!) Any advice/recommendations?

After Hobart - we drive on to Strahan but wonder if its worth it to stop the night at Derwent Bridge area to explore a bit of Lake St Clair. If so - is there anywhere to stay in the Derwent Bridge area?

Thanks so much for your help!

Salamanca market is on Saturday mornings.

St Ives is within walking distance of the touristy parts of town, as will be any B&B listed as being in Battery Point. Those in West Hobart are walkable with a bit of effort, otherwise it's generally pretty easy to get parking near the docks on Saturday mornings. Go early.

There's not much accommodation in Derwent Bridge, but it can be useful to stay there to break the long drive to Strahan.

Probably the best is Derwent Bridge Chalet & Studios: http://www.derwent-bridge.com/

The Wilderness Hotel can be a bit of a culture shock as it's a typical Aussie pub, but it's also the only place to get an evening meal in DB. There are no shops in DB.

And finally, the Lake St Clair "Resort" doesn't know what a good review looks like, unfortunately.

Luigi,

We are intending visiting Tasmania in March 2012, and your comment above has just confirmed about us staying in Derwent Bridge to break up the drive between Strahan and Hobart. I had already bookmarked Derwent Bridge Chalet & Studios to make a booking next year. The scenic surrounds and walks around Lake St Clair will no doubt make up for the lack of shops!

If you want to stay centrally in Hobart, then I recommend Gattonside B&B which is in a great location. It's walkable to Salamanca, Battery Point and the city centre and the rooms are lovely.
