Which rental car company's from Melbourne allow you to take the car on the ferry?
I suspect that none of them will allow this.
Why would you want to pay to put a rental car on the ferry to Hobart and back?
None of them to the best of my knowledge. And the prohibitions are very specific. It's not just a matter of not being insured while on the ferry. The usual restriction makes it contrary to the Terms & Conditions just to operate a mainland vehicle in Tasmania.
The solution (and cheaper anyway) is to get yourself onto the ferry without a car. The 109 tram is good. And then rent a car from Devonport on arrival. All the major rental companies either have a counter at the ferry terminal or will deliver a car to you there.
Hmmmmm, personally I'd be dropping the car at the airport, flying to Launceston or Hobart and picking up another car there. Book early and the flight will be less than the long and often uncomfortable boat crossing.
The boat crossing is a joy in its own right, Eva. :)
Thank you everyone!
