cascades prison hobart

Going to Hobart for four days over Easter. We are really interested in going to the cascades women's prison. We are wondering whether we should go on Lousia's walk tour, or just go to the prison itself and join the 'Her story' dramatized tour. Does Louisa's walk also take you into the prison? Are they basically the same?

The prison itself consists of four perimeter walls. There are no extant original buildings. Do Louisa's Walk.

The best, most intact female factory remaining in Australia is at Ross, most of the way up the Midland Highway to Launceston. www.parks.tas.gov.au/indeX.aspX?base=2770

I did the Her Story tour last week because the time suited me better than Louisa's Walk. I thought it was brilliant. It's a 45 minute dramatisation of a woman's time in the prison - in reality an amalgamation of a few women's stories blended into one life for simplicity. The two actors are fantastic. If you have time arrive for the 10 am tour then do Her Story.

We did the Her Story tour in December while visiting Hobart, and even not-really-into-museums DH enjoyed it. On the way out afterwards we had a nice chat with one of the actors.

As Luigi points out, there isn't really a "prison" as such still extant, just the perimeter and a couple of dividing walls plus a small cottage which was the matron's house (which you can only look in one window).

The section where Her Story is acted out has markers delineating the original enclosures and their purposes are explained in Her Story.
