driving adelaide to halls gap...highlights to see?

We are leaving Adelaide about noon and taking 6 days to drive to Melbourne. We'd like to go through Halls Gap on the way to GOR.

Can anyone suggest a place to stay on that first 5 hour or so drive from Adelaide and interesting stops we might make? We are then planning to spend the next 2 nights in Halls Gap. We are interested in native animals, local history, and wine. Thanks in advance for the help.

You could do a bit of winery time in the Coonawarra - just up from Mt Gambier which may ne a good place to spend your first night.

If you like wildlife I can only suggest the Little Desert Nature Lodge in Little Desert near Nhill. About 4.5 hours from Adelaide, and 2 hours from Halls Gap.

Great opportunity to see the malleefowl, a truly unique bird.

Naracoorte is about 4 hours from Adelaide and is an interesting small town, but the highlight is the world heritage listed Naracoorte Caves.

Halls Gap should offer you a wild fauna environment, and when in Melbourne do a trip to Phillp Island for the penquins. Healsville in the Yarra Ranges national park, is abundant with native fauna.

As you stated you were looking for a five hour drive on your first day, Adelaide to Robe via Talem Bend and The Princes Highway (Coorong).

Alternative The Coonawarra wine region via Keith, and from both first destinations continue to Narracoorte (Caves) and Mount Gambier (Blue Lake).

Depart South Australia into Victoria via the Great Ocean Road to Port Fairy.

Port Fairy north to Halls Gap

Driving towards Melbourne stop off at the historic town of Ballarat.

The most scenic part of the GOR is between Warnambool & Torquay, so I'd drive to Halls Gap first before heading down to the GOR. I haven't driven all the way to Adelaide, so can't advise you on that part of the trip.

There are a few good wine regions in Victoria, which you will be driving near. There are some wineries around the Grampians & the Pyrenees region around Avoca. These are warmer climate wines, so really good Shiraz. The Pyrenees might be too far toward Melbourne for this trip though.

There are also some wineries around the Otways, but I'm not as familiar with them. The Bellarine Peninsula as at the end of the GOR, & produces some excellent Pinot Noir & Chardonnay. Perhaps plan a night in Queenscliff as there's a lot of history there.

Depending on your time frame, you do have a couple of options to get to Melbourne. If you have the time, a detour up to Ballarat & the Macedon ranges would be good. There's a lot of history as it's an old gold mining region, plus the Macedon Ranges have both cool & warm climate wines (depending on location).

Another option would be to catch the ferry across to the Mornington Peninsula, but some car rental companies won't cover you for any damage caused on the ferry.

Have a look at the visitvictoria website for more info on the GOR & the other regions. There's also a route planner there which is handy.

Naracoorte Caves, Robe for some fresh seafood if you opt for the coast road .. make sure to pick up a crayfish from Sky Seafoods and sit on the beach for a feast with a bottle of lovely wine from the MtBenson region.

If you do take the inland Naracoorte trip the Caves and blue lake in MtGambier are a must. Suggest overnighting at The Barn in Mount Gambier before hitting the GOR. Halls Gap is best accessed via Dukes Highway (8) this really doesnt take in the bottom part of the South East where Naracoorte and Mt Gambier are... most people access the GOR via Mt Gamber rather than Halls Gap but it is do-able with the number of days you have
