Not to be missed

We are spending 5 days in Melbourne in January 2010 - can anyone recommend things not to be missed - eg we plan to do the ocean drive and will be hiring a car - also restaurant recommendations would be appreciated too, many thanks

Have a look at the Trip Reports for Melbourne. This recent one is excellent.

You'll want to take a couple of days to do the Great Ocean Road if driving yourselves.

I'd say a helicopter flight over the coastline around Port Campbell is not to be missed.

As you are from the UK, do you enjoy cricket? Or for that matter, do you enjoy sport generally? If so, do a tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the National Sports Museum.

There are so many things in and around Melbourne 'not to be missed'. The thing is that a lot of those things may not interest you at all. We need more info from you about your interests, how many people is 'we'.

We need you to read 'Things to do ' in the More on Melbourne on the left of the page. We need you to buy/borrow/ and whate4ver any books, magazines, guides, brochures you can about Melbourne and Victoria.

This way you will have more of an idea of what you would like to see and we can advise if it is doable.

If you have only 5 days for Melbourne, including the GOR trip your choices are very limited.

Again, with restaurants - do you want top notch, average or budget meals.

Again, look at the restaurant pages on Melbourne TA and numerous trip reports have other visitors ideas of what they thought was the best for them.

For your best 5 days its a matter of research research research, Sorry, but thats the truth.

Lots of lovely well patronised restaurants in Hardware Lane, Lygon St. Little Collins St. everywhere.

We went to Grosso Florentino on Collins St. one night and enjoyed our

meal . But then I mostly enjoy a meal anywhere I don't have to prepare, cook, and clean up afterwaards(lol) One of the problems with recommending restaurants is that the chef changes and the food changes - for better or for worse. - One mans meat is anothers poison.

Another place was at Docklands , a Middle Eastern restauirant. Very good, overlooking the water.

Lots of choices along South Baank.
