four to six nights around melbourne

flying from uk to sydney. We are thinking of staying in sydney for a few nights then hiring a car and driving up to brisbane. We are then thinking of flying to Melbourne and staying here for about 4 nights and then hiring a car and touring around melbourne. Have got around 4 to 6 nights to sightsee. Can anyone give me suggestions including the GOR and anything to the east of melbourne (that can't be done using public transport whilst we are staying in the city). We like beaches, walking, and any tourist experiences worth visiting. Best areas to stay the night would also be appreciated.

We stayed for two nights on the Mornington Peninsular before our stay in Melbourne City. We had a hire car and drove to many vineyards, beaches and the beautiful town of Sorrento. We had a wonderful time there and it was actually the highlight of our holiday!

The visit victoria site is a great one outlining the different areas of the state and they provide suggested route maps: visitvictoria.com/displayobject.cfm/…

Victoria is a small state compared to the rest of the country - so you can get anywhere from melbourne in less than a day.

The Dandenongs are a mountain range very close to Melbourne. You CAN do this via public transport if you wanted to - but having a car would be a better option. It's a lovely leafy area with lots of villages, quaint places to stay and eat and drink. Villages like Olinda, Sassafras and Monbulk have plenty of B&B sort of accomodation.

As Scottygirl suggested - Mornington peninsula is fantastic. Another great spot in that area is the Peninsuala hot springs - http://www.peninsulahotsprings.com/ and this area is close to Phillip Island which is famous for marine life and the Little penguin parade www.phillipislandguide.com/thingstodo.html. Phillip Island or Sorrento would be a good place to stay the night.

Daylesford and the surrounding towns in "Spa Country" is also a great place to check out. Lots of natural springs and beautiful B&B's and cottages, good food and wine. This area is quite near to Ballarat which is worth checking out as it is a old mining town. Sovereign Hill is a big tourist attraction - http://www.sovereignhill.com.au/. Daylesford, Hepburn Springs and Kyneton are good places to stay the night.

To the north of the state near the town of Echuca runs the Murray river which has numerous paddlesteamers on it. Very different scenery to the rest of the state and quite enjoyable. Echuca is a good place to stay.

GOR is wonderful. Hopefully the weather will be ok for you - it gets wet and blustery during our winter. Check out the Timboon cheese factory and of course the 12 apostles and the beaches. Port Campbell is a good place to stay the night as it's fairly central. Keep going along the road and check out Port Fairy which is quite historical and very "Irish". Worth staying overnight also.
