Good restaurants for groups with funky atmosphere

Hi all,

I am looking for a restaurant for a group of between 4-7 people aged between 21-35, with a funky "Melbourne" atmosphere, for a Saturday night.

Not too fussed about the food, although good food would help. Need to keep it on the low expense side for the younger ones, and nice cocktails would help.

All of us are from WA and I'd love to show off Melbourne's best as I'll be moving there next year and I'd love my friends to come and visit!

Any ideas?

Cheers

Hi, Alleekat,

Possibly something on Southbank, where you can sit and people watch as you eat overlooking the Yarra. Blue Train Cafe has interesting decor with a bar and a sort of pizza/cafe style menu. Here's a link to the restaurants. Dozens to choose from.

Seems to be a very popular thing to wander along Southbank watching the buskers, dropping into one or more of the cafes/ restaurants bars for a drink, stopping by the gelato shop, the Lindt shop and strolling along the Yarra to the Casino complex and checking out the designer shops and the whole glitzy infrastructure that launches itself on your senses.

Forget the CBD and head towards Brunswick St Fitzroy, Smith St or Gertrude St Collingwood, Westgarth St, Northcote, Victoria St, Richmond or Fitzroy St St Kilda.

I'd recommend

Cookie - http://www.cookie.net.au/ - Modern Thai food

The Long Room - http://www.thelongroom.com.au/lr/ - Mix of Everything

Red Spice Road - http://www.redspiceroad.com/ - South East Asian

All three are very melbourne and great for groups.

Another vote for Panama Dining Room - good food, great vibe, v Melbourne and good cocktails.

It's in the Smith St/Brunswick St precinct where there are plenty of other bars to kick on to if you feel like a change of pace.

Also in that area, check out the Robbie Burns Hotel (a great spanish restaurant that works well with larger groups) and Little Creatures (big and casual, long tables perfect for groups, good vibe and good beer. Need to go for a short walk after dinner for the cocktails but Brunswick St has many options nearby- try Black Pearl or Libation near the corner of Johnson St).

If it needs to be in the CBD I'd go for somewhere like Cookie. I'd avoid the more generic areas like Southbank and Docklands. Personally, I think the atmosphere you're after is better found more in these locations:

Brunswick Street, Fitzroy

Smith Street, Collingwood

Gertrude Street, Fitzroy/Collingwood

There are plenty of restaurant choices and lots of bars to head to after dinner.

Other areas like Sydney Road, Brunswick and High Street, Northcote also have really good atmospheric restaurant/pub options but I think you probably have more bar hopping options for after dinner if you head to Brunswick Street.

Some restaurants that have a good atmosphere that are also quite reasonable-

Bimbo Deluxe http://www.bimbodeluxe.com.au/

Vegie Bar http://www.vegiebar.com.au/

Kommune Canteen http://www.kommunecanteen.com/

Thanks for your suggestions everyone!

For the group we ended up going to Carlton as we only knew last minute how many people there would be, everyone wanted Italian and were staying close to Carlton. It was great because it was cheap and lively, but not what I was going for with the funky atmosphere but never mind! They were happy.

Anyway thanks to your Suggestions I have now tried cookie - delicious food and great cocktails and emerald peacock - nice rooftop area.

Next on the list is Hellenic republic :)

I've also found heaps of other cool places too by exploring :) - Trunk in the city was nice outdoor atmosphere, rooftop bar was nice on a balmy night, Carlton yacht club had amazing cocktails (try the death by Tim tam!), a cool outdoor space next to the yarra beyond fed square (not sure of the name) was great for a beer on a hot arvo.

Thanks again :) x
