healesville sanctuary

We have 1 day from a cruise in melbourne. How far away is healesville sanctuary? Not sure if we could do sanctuary and then spend afternoon exploring melbourne via the free tram. We like old building and pretty views. Our next day we have a full day touring Burnie so maybe dont want a long day on a coach when in melbourne. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, Healesvillse Sanctuary is quite a distance from the City centre( 1hour plus by car) AS you are on a cruisee and have limited time you'd be advised to organise a tour through your ships travel service. Even if you did that you'd see next to nothing of the city centre as to do Healesville justice you'd require at least half a day.

If you had more than 1 day visiting, then I would recommend Healesville. However, getting to Healesville from Port Melbourne will take at least 2 lots of transport (and approximately 60-90 minutes of travel), or by car or bus. I assume you will need to back at your ship by about 4pm? It would not leave any time to explore the city.

If you want to visit Australian wildlife, then I would recommend the Melbourne Zoo, which is located just 5 kms from the city center. You could easily visit the Zoo for 2 - 3 hours and then come back via the city and take a tour on the city circle tram.
