What to do in Melbourne for 4 days?

Hi peeps, I'll be visiting beautiful Melbourne sometime mid Oct 2012 with my hubs and in-laws. What would a plausible itinerary be like? Would really like to squeeze in some maj attractions, vineyards, shopping (not necessary high-end) and of course savour some local delights. Please could anyone give some suggestions? Also is Victoria Market worth a visit? We like visiting flea markets and places as such as they are all so ecclectic and fun. Do places like this exist only during the weekends?

Thanks in advance for all your help. All advices are very much appreciated!

Do you want to stay in Melbourne or do some day trips (ie for the wineries)? Will you be renting a car to do the day trips or do you want to do tours? The Great Ocean Road & Phillip Island (for the Penguins) are 2 popular trips, plus for the wineries you should look at either the Yarra Valley or Mornington Peninsula.

If you are going to the Yarra Valley, you can include a visit to Healesville Sanctuary (either self driving or doing a tour). The Mornington Peninsula is best done self driving & has the Peninsula Hot Springs & Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm amongst other attractions. Mid October will be too early for 'U-pick' strawberries, but there might be some early fruit available to buy.

Check the Top Questions for info about your options for the GOR. If you self drive you will need to stay overnight somewhere along the GOR, but can include winery visits on the Bellarine Peninsula or around Geelong. I can give you more specific info if you decide on this option. If you only have 1 day, then a tour wis recommended (it's a very long day of driving).

Also check the Top Questions for more info about what to do in Melbourne.

Flea Markets are usually on weekends. Camberwell market has a good one on Sunday mornings. There are also Farmers Markets (fresh local produce) & Handmade Craft Markets every weekend, though the locations vary. Let me know if you want more info about any of these.

Try to visit Abbotsford Convent ( inner city) where they have a farmers market, wonderful bakery and is next door to Collingwood children's farm. If you are travelling with little ones, within the Botanical Gardens is the Ian Potter Children's garden, a magically place.

Try to visit Abbotsford Convent ( inner city) where they have a farmers market, wonderful bakery and beautiful gardens. Or explore the lane ways of Melbourne; start in Degraves St through to Centre Place. Best places to eat, you will be spoiled in Melbourne. My favorites; Gingerboy, Pellegrini's, Mamasita & Cumulus Inc.

South Melbourne market is worth a visit

The Vic Market is well worth a visit. It's open every day but Monday & Wednesday.

Are you staying in the CBD or further out? If you're in the CBD then there's a whole day's worth of wandering through the city arcades for shopping, along with the major department stores and outlet shops at Harbour Town.

If you stay in the City there is also the FREE tram that does a circle of the city and goes to many of the destinations in the City. There is also the Museum in the City, you can walk along Southbank in the City at night (where the Casino is located) and just "people watch" and they have fire that shoots out of towers I think every half hour, inside the casino building there is lots to see. There is the Melbourne Zoo, you can go up to the Eureka Skydeck and walk out onto a glass floor that overlooks the whole of the city, there is St Kilda beach with markets on the weekends, Chinatown for some "yum cha", they have ghost tours at night through the streets, Melbourne Market is good, there is an IMAX 3D theatre and millions of other things to do - you certainly won't be bored!

Thinking outside of Melbs, I reckon you can easily squeeze in the great ocean road - its without a doubt my favorite adventure.

I've done it 1 day before. however, I'd recommend you stay the night in somewhere like Lorne or Apollo bay - both amazing places.

Transport options would include:

- Tours: http://www.gowest.com.au l - I used them in 2007 and was very happy.

- Self drive: Car hire... http://vroomvromvroom.com.au or http://comparecarrental.com.au

- Campervan hire?

Highly recommend wandering around Melbourne's lane ways such as De Graves Street and Block Arcade.

A visit to the Library (opposite Melbourne Central is a must) - make sure you go into the Reading Room and look at the beautiful dome.

As for shopping - Myer and David Jones in the city are great, as is Melbourne Central.

For outlets there are DFOs (Direct Factory Outlets) at South Wharf (down past Crown and Exhibition Buildings) or Harbour Town, Docklands (give the Spencer Street one a miss) as well as Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

You could also give Bridge Road Richmond a wander and Chapel Street Prahran has everything!

A visit to Melbourne is not complete without a meal on Lygon Street, Carlton (Little Italy) where the vendors practically beg for your patronage. The food at most is fairly decent and well-priced just make sure they give you a free bottle of wine or entree!
